Re: "Bloom"

This is a lovely still life. Did you work from life or a photo?

Re: "Bloom"

The vase shape is good but the flowers are a bit squashed up at the top of the paper! Perhaps add some much lighter tones and highlights to the flowers to give them a bit more importance?

Re: "Bloom"

Thanks for taking the time to comment, ladies

I once again ran out of room at the top of the painting. As you all see I love vases but the title should have been Vase. Next time I will work to get the sizes and proportions correct.

This one was done from life. I stayed up all night watching art movies, and sketching and painting. There are two things working against me, material-wise. The paper I use is the Strathmore paper. I don't think there is much tooth to it, but imprinted ridges. It just will not take more color without mashing the pastel into it. Doesn't mashing the color mute the colors?

The other problem is that I am using the Blick and Mungyo pastels, and the Expressionists oil pastels. None of them have good color ranges or brilliant colors at that.

The only reasons I am using the OP's is for texture and to get rid of them. My wife and son don't like using them, either. Also on a hot day they give an oil painting texture which is nice. Once they are gone, they are gone! As for the soft pastels I am eyeing some Mount Visions and the Mi-Tientes paper. Then we are in business!

Re: "Bloom"

Mmm, the way to get rid of ops is to paint large paintings on rough paper. Try sandpaper?
