Here’s a recent oil painting from the Neuse River, near my home in Raleigh, NC. II was late afternoon and I really like the warm colors contrasting with the dark waters. Painted on an 8×10 canvas panel.

Great use of contrast in temperature Tom. The grasses in the background set up that waterfall nicely and really like how you depicted the shadows.

I like how you used simple colors and shapes to render the realism. The water especially, with those blues and grays separated like that look very great together, and I can feel it rushing down the stream. You did a good job at getting those reflections in the water, and the shadows in it too very well balanced. I like how the background is mild and has a very serene atmosphere, and the main attraction is this bubbling brook.

Tom, you have a very distinctive and pleasing style. Gary

Very pretty painting Tom, love those grasses. The color of them really pops against the dark water.

Fine work! Good feeling of space, great reflections. When I view this on my iPad and hold it out at arms length, it really comes together.

I hope you keep doing paintings of this area, beautiful!

Everything else being equal, I would rather be in the painting zone.

Thanks for your comments. The river has a 30-mile long bike trail alongside it, which I ride on often. Every now and then I stop to take photos of scenes when the lighting is nice. This particular day the afternoon light was really nice and I took a lot of photos.
