Thanks mtpalms.

I've started on the headress:

I am also working on her necklace.

I'm a bit stumped on the background and it appears to be competing with her face.

Value of the background is not a problem, not even the color is an issue, but the saturation seems overwhelming.

Thanks Delofasht. I'll see how I can desaturate. Do I add white to the colours? Not sure.

Great rendition of the various distances/ planes. The inclusion of the little boy also ties it in and draws in the attention.

Great job Wayne.

Next time I work on it will be with an actual smaller brush (this whole painting was done with a #2 bright), but I'm down to details now and been working hard to try and use the edge of the brush to do lines and straights so far. Moving forward with the small brush is going to help a ton though.

Looking good so far Delo. I can see what you mean about not having a smaller brush. Keep going.

Mix up a gray of the right value, scrape or wipe back your yellow and add the yellow to your gray and mix, that should achieve your desaturated yellow of the right value. I suggest a tiny touch more orange or red to the mix to avoid yellows tendency to turn green in mixes with grays or black. This should push the background color back significantly and still keep it looking like the same general color (warm yellow color).

An alternate method is to finish covering everything in the background, allow it to dry and add a glaze of ultramarine with a touch of magenta over it all to knock the yellow down and create a sense of depth. This is harder to explain because it requires a lot more operations and will likely cause the background to be darker than the more direct approach.

Thanks Delo. This advice is appreciated and I'll be doing just that.
