Up In The Tree Tops,
That Photo was taken from a deck about 20 ft off the ground. The cat was climbing in a Cottonwood tree at about the same height.

Re: April Oil Gusher Chat & Challenge

My version of the cat 8x8. I used some graphite for the grey shading of the cat.

Christel, I love your version. Am always impressed by small size. I seem unable to work small. Your cat is soft and fuzzy. Maela49

Cristel
Fantastic Cat. I am amazed that you have accented the area around the cat so the cat is definitely "up a tree." That is not entirely clear in the photo but you have balanced the cat in mid air, so to speak. A very good enhancement of a photo.
Beautiful work! The colors are perfect!

Re: April Oil Gusher Chat & Challenge

Thanks Ratchet. I first lightened the photo in the middle to get that effect.

Great interpretation of the cat pic, Christel! Did you use graphite on the ground or did you draw into the OP?

Re: April Oil Gusher Chat & Challenge

Thanks Rich and Laika. I used a 4H pencil on top of the cat's face into the oil pastels to slightly darken the white.

Very nice cat Tuscany. I am not sure which of these I would like to attempt yet.

Re: April Oil Gusher Chat & Challenge

I had to do the lighthouse. Fun exercise and I'm nearly done. I have the fisherman left to do or...perhaps leave him out. Still deciding on that... I decided the picture needed a composition change to make it into an more interesting painting, and I wanted the lighthouse to be a more prominent piece in the scene. So I painted the scene vertical, which helped elongate the lighthouse, and make it seem taller than it is from photo. I Also moved the sail boat to it's far right....Still deciding on that fisherman..hmm

12" x 9" on 400series Strathmore. I love the texture of this more than my Canson mi-tientes. I used mostly mungyo and a little bit of senns as highlights. You'll see the paper come through on some parts, mainly the middle sections. I'm doing that on purpose...basically letting the color and texture of the paper provide certain effects when the painting is looked at as a whole.

This was a lot of fun! Thanks Ratchet for hosting and providing this months pics.
