"Art at the Classic" - Draft Horse Classic Call to Artists

http://nevadacountyfair.com/draft-ho...t-the-classic/

Sorry for not posting this sooner!

Postmark deadline is July 11th. Work produced in the past 3 years can be entered, so if you already have any horse/western themed art, you can enter it.

It's always a very good show. No scratchboard category, but there's a "miniature" category and an "anything goes" category that work. A couple of us have been suggesting they add scratchboard to the "pen & ink, pencil, graphite & charcoal" category, but that hasn't happened (yet). They came up with the miniature category a few years ago; it's actually "small format" since you can enter anything up to 14" x 14" framed. The "anything goes" category for "Fine Art that doesn't fit in any of the listed classes", is new this year, so that helps scratchboarders with larger format works.

That's my donkey scratchboard "Rocky" from the 2013 show on the page.

Here's a little board I just finished that I'll enter this year. "Tumbler" is a 4.75" x 2.75" board. Scratched with a #16 X-Acto, some re-inking with a pen/re-scratching, no washes. This is one of those blingy doohickeys that's attached to the top of a fancy horse collar. The top part swings, spins and tumbles, hence the name and my uninspired title for it.

blingy doohickey? This is very fine. I hope it does well in the show.

Thanks, Sandra! It has to be accepted for the show first, but I think it will be.

Blingy doohickey - a very technical term

Nicely done, Ann it is a pity that exhibition sponsors/Gallery owners are still confused about categorizing SB Art

The application says that anything not oils or acrylics will need to be under glass or plexiglass. Was yours last year?

Re: "Art at the Classic" - Draft Horse Classic Call to Artists

We're trying to educate when we can, aren't we, Venkat? I think shows are starting to understand, they just don't see much scratchboard art, so it's not something they even think about. There's a smaller local show coming up that has an odd mix of categories, including pen & ink, but not drawing. I think pen & ink is pretty rare anymore. There's nothing that scratchboard fits into, except possibly "mixed media", but not really. I'm a member of the art group that is putting on the show and I asked about that, they said there's no problem entering scratchboard and that there really aren't specific categories, it was just a list. I suggested next time a "drawing" category might be more appropriate. Doing what I can to bring awareness, as I know many of us are!

Sue, my 2 scratchboards were not under glass last year and I think I sent one piece the prior year that was not. I included a note with the art the prior year that explained that with the sealer, they did not require glass. No one took issue.

Thanks Ann for the tip, will include a note on the scratch I am going to submit since I don't know how knowledgeable judge and staff will be.
Nice piece Ann. Don't think I will have a piece but will look up the show and put on list, there is always next year

Ann, keep doing exquisite work like this and soon it won't matter what you call it since it is distinctively fine art. I do understand the problem of having to place one's art into categories which is unfortunate.
