Giannah with a little Amedeo

Influenced by Amedeo Modigliani, this is the watercolour painting I attempted last week. It was quite a challenge in the timing and blending of the tones

Painted on Waterford 300gsm, 22 x 15in --- about 3hrs+ --- some of the bg was finished at home.

Have I got close to his delicate portrayal of the female form? Are the outline lines too heavy? Has the bg failed it? C&Cs needed!

Hi Geoff, am not familiar with Modigliani, so looked up and found that, yours does seem inspired by his works in the use exaggerated shapes and forms, but beyond that, it has your unique touch. I don't find the outlines heavy at all. It's interesting to see that, while the lines tend to divide the body into parts, the whole figure has such a unified look despite that. The background elements look good to me.

Geoff, I like the contrast of colours between the figure and the background. One or two proportions look a little odd (small left foot and head maybe, upper right arm much thinner than lower arm) but overall the composition works for me.

Overall I think its pretty nice- i too like the bkgrnd aginst the figure

but its to small for the big ...., the right hand

Her head has a nice feel the hair feels light and assured. Your line of the figure is not delicate, interesting yes , but not of the same feel as the face and hair. I often have a practice sheet to work out my brush stroke. I figure the grip position on the handle to get the length of stroke in one pass(the further from the brush the longer the stroke). I often use my other hand as a bridge and some times pivot it on one finger to add a counter arc or movement to the arc of the brush movement. You have the play with it then you will have an assure stroke on the finished work.
Your blue shadow in the blue rectangle is not squared up to horizontal is this what you wanted? The green blanket above the leg has no shading so it flips up flat, the rest of the blanket cups her, I like that quality it feels like she is sitting in a leaf so I suggest nesting her into that section also.
Think in terms of design with this type of piece. You may want to refer back to leZart's post he is highly concern with design elements if you can look past his photo to the visual design elements he could be a source of inspiration in terms of design elements.

Thank you Kiran, Nathan, CarolKay, Egon and Mike for looking and commenting. I was quite pleased with this one but can see now ( ! ! ) that her right hand is too large and I don't know if it is correctable with watercolours. Big sigh! And that upper arm is too thin. Why didn't I notice that?
