" A Child's World. "

I had one more 8.5 x 11.5" black board (Paper backed) . I thought I could use it for a Portrait since I had not done any Portrait for a long time ,That unfortunately proved to be near disaster , because the surface was unsuitable for cross hatching The scratches are not therefore clean
However I completed the picture with these limitations . The piece presented here is a cropped version of a popular painting by Sir John Everett Millais (1829- 1896) , British Painter, one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The painting was originally titled " A Child's World " and when A&F Pears bought it foir their advertisement campaign for Soap, the title was changed to " Bubbles" .The curly golden- haired boy portrayed is the grandson of Millais, who in later years was Admiral Sir William James . The AD compaign was so popular that he came to be called Admiral Bubbles . That Millais drew flak for commercializing his art and the controversy raged even after his death, is another story.
I have retained the original title for my picture. I have reproduced the reference used .The picture should look better with full figure and on a larger board If I had a board of size 24x36" , I would have done it. Black board is better suited for this and I make only white ones . .

Gosh your strokes just amaze me Venkat. So clean. Oh I for one would love to see you do the whole figure. And thank for the very interesting info on the original artist.

It is hard to believe you did such a wonderful piece on paper scratchboard. Very, very impressive!

Love the back story on this and great job on the work despite the cross-hatching being a problem

This looks great! You truly need to try the Ampersand boards but you still did an exceptional job on paper.

Wonderful, Venkat! A superb job even though you only had the paper to work with. I really like your style - it looks like an etching or woodcut.

Re: " A Child's World. "

You supplied some great information along with your portrait, which is so well done by the way. I've done a few pieces on SA paper, so I know what limitations it would have held for you...but you did it! Awesome job.
