Need help with eyes

I cannot get the likeness, here. Any suggestions? This is a commission. I worked and worked on the eyes over this past week and gave up. I signed it and sprayed it so I could get a photo without shine, ran it by my client and she said no, the eyes/nose are not working. I know, I was just hoping I was crazy... I cannot figure out what to do, so I would like fresh eyes to give it a look. Thanks.

8x10 graphite and white charcoal on mi-tientes smooth side.

Re: Need help with eyes

This seems to be well done to me. I can only say what I look for when I paint portraits. The nose is too long. That makes the distance from the bottom of the nose to the top lip line too long. Also the highlight is a "v" shape. The nose highlight seems to be more square or rectangle in shape. The eyes seem to be correct to me, the shadows under the eyes are not shaped correctly. The values on the face need a little more depth, especially around the mouth dimples. Hope this helps you. JC

Re: Need help with eyes

I think you’re close. Try darkening the shadows above the eyes.

Thank you, jcadams and Tom. I have messed around with it quite a bit and I think I am going to have to start over. I will keep your tips in mind.

You've gotten just the help you needed. Your first attempt shows you have an excellent natural talent. Keep striving, Virginia. The only additional critique is to look again on the shadows on a whole. Her hands and little furry jacket and hair need more shadow work to bring out the depth. Don't be afraid putting darks in a work - it probably half the success of any work.

Re: Need help with eyes

You should define the tear ducts. The eyes are too almond-shaped.

Okay, after much ridiculous agony, I think she looks like herself. Her mother agrees. Whew!

I tried fixing the first drawing, but it did not work, so I started over.

Re: Need help with eyes

This second looks a whole lot better than the first one. Mainly because of its lightness. The very dark background on the first gives it quite a sinister feeling, quite unsuitable for the subject. This second one is lovely. It needs very little more doing to it in my view.
