Continuing from this thread …
Kay, what you did in the sketchbook with the butterfly and bee were tremendous! These would qualify as beautiful works on their own. A few years ago I picked up some sketchbooks on sale and have not used them. When we are out doing errands and sports there would be no opportunity to draw, and during our recent cruise we were very busy sightseeing and doing activities. Since I am a very slow worker, I constantly procrastinate as I do not feel there is enough time to paint or draw, which is just an excuse. Perhaps I should make an effort to put a little of anything in a sketchbook daily? Seeing what others have put in their sketchbooks is inspiring, but intimidating also. If I sketch something that is a mess, I’ll feel as if I have “ruined” the book, which is ridiculous.
What I did do was finally get a few things framed, as Michaels (craft store) had custom framing at a considerable discount from their usual steep prices, and the pieces are there now. I did have a handful of things of which I was proud, so I want to be able to hang them on my walls. The framer was exceptionally kind, and spent a very long time with me and was not trying to push more expensive options.
Just “getting started” is tough, thus I do not practice nearly enough. As my husband, Jerry, correctly reminds me, it is supposed to be enjoyable and I am turning it into a source of aggravation. I must enjoy the process and focus on “outcome independence”. I have a photo of a seagull I took in Bar Harbor that I have been thinking about painting, but I have quite the tendency to be unhappy with the results and let myself get discouraged too easily at times. You know the joke about how many artist it takes to change a light bulb? Ten – one to change the bulb and nine to tell him it looks good!
Sorry Joy I missed your post! I know exactly what you mean about sketchbooks. I have a good collection of them in a box, some I’ve had years and barely used, because I’m saving them for when I have a good idea, or because the paper’s too nice to just sketch any old thing on, etc. … So recently I’ve bought a few and I’m determined to just fill them, even if what I draw is complete rubbish. The only way to waste paper is to not use it, I keep telling myself!
I’ve also started doodling at my desk at work, little designs – this counts as art too, I’ve decided. I can now say I’m drawing every day.
Thanks for your comments about my sketches. I enjoy working with pens now, it’s very relaxing! It’s also a lot more portable for when I’m working away from home – I’ve taken my paints away before but they take up too much space and I worry about spilling paint!

November 2, 2018 at 9:26 am #721441My to-do list for November:
The A&W challenge: I missed last month’s so I’m determined not to miss this one! I’ve chosen my image and I think I know how I’m going to do it, so I just need to get going.
The Plant Parade challenge: I have banned myself from drawing plants from photos so this month I’ll have to go out and buy myself some flowers to work from – never a bad thing to have flowers in the house!
The Pen & Ink challenge: I’m still enjoying using pens and I like the fact this challenge is all about drawing from life.
What is everyone else up to this month? Please feel free to share your progress / news here!

If I can, I’ll post up a fraction of it in the next day or so. After this I’m not sure how much more I’ll get done this month, I’m away on holiday this Saturday to Wednesday and the week after that we’re getting a new kitchen fitted, so I’ll lose all my painting/drawing spaces! Having said that, I’ve been working on my challenge picture at my office desk, in my lunch hour.

My husband took my pup with him this morning so I have to take my breaks when I want to, not when Rocket thinks it would be a nice time to get a treat or go for a walk!
