Re: Portrait Gallery-Feb-March 2012

Lawrence and Dana..

Thanks so much for the comments. I am most proud of the little blonde.

Believe it or not the photo of the barn pic was very hard lighting...but I know now I should have fixed that....especially since I tell my students..."you are the artist...edit...correct...etc" It is framed and I just might undo it to make those corrections!

Thanks again.
Yvonne

First time I've posted anything to this or any forum, so some trepidation. Recently retired and started painting 2 years ago. Here's a portrait of my son. Critique welcome

OMG! That is amazingly beautiful. Are you sure you have't been painting for 3 lifetimes? Well done, indeed!

Re: Portrait Gallery-Feb-March 2012

Dana and Yvonne
Thank you for the kind encouraging comments. 2 years? Only a slight lie - I painted a small portrait about 5 years ago, an airbrush painting from a photo in 1989, a few pen and ink drawings in 1979, and a couple of bits and bobs before that. Always promised myself I would take it up seriously when I retire - so I've done more in the last 2 years than the previous 50+. I've just finished the one of my son. Perhaps I should post photos of my other stuff for comment from the veterans - which is the appropriate sub-forum for that?

Love the stuff posted - especially admire Raeburn's - wish I could be so free with colour

Vic

Re: Portrait Gallery-Feb-March 2012

I have not posted for a while, nor have I done much painting lately. But today I broke out the pastels again and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I was itching to do this little girl who attended my granddaughter's birthday party last October. I don't even know her name but I loved her wide eyed expression and her fragile look.
Marianne.

Vic, your painting, for someone who has only taken up the brush 2 years ago is phenominal, I'm very impressed. This is really up there with the best!

Annemarie Superb as usual.

Re: Portrait Gallery-Feb-March 2012

Hi Tommie and Marianne. Thanks. Difficult to say how long it took - managed to fracture my hip in the middle :-( Done over several months - estimate 10 - 14 hours, maybe more - I do an awful lot of messing about - bit obsessional I suppose.

Nice pastel Marianne - wish I could be that free

This is pretty fantastic! I think it's quite HUGE as well ? Very well done! Have you had any training ? If you didn't - I would be amazed that you sorted all of that out on your own ( but anything is possible!)..

Great paintings as well Larubia!

Mariane S - lovely eyes !

Re: Portrait Gallery-Feb-March 2012

I pretty much agree with everything that Kevin said. Marianne, the value contrast between the eyes and the rest of the portrait is quite dramatic and effective (nice lines too!). Larubia, the warm dark background really brought out the luminosity of the figure and dress.

Vic, I'm in awe like everyone else. To me this portrait is at the same level as Ian Cumberland, Paul Elmsley, Jan Mikulka and others. I'm amazed that you've only been doing this for two years. My only minor crit is that the neck perhaps appears a bit too wrinkled for such a young man but otherwise the portrait is very accomplished. Bravo! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Re: Portrait Gallery-Feb-March 2012

Raeburn: Just superb studies. The shimmering technique gives the subjects great vitality.
Larubia: Your lady in white is lovely. The sensitively portrayed hands are so much part of her expression. The other subject has a brooding sensuality.
Yvonne: Three nice studies. The child engages the viewer very charmingly while the two other subjects are lost in their own world.
Vic: Terrific portrait. Intense, intimate, arresting.
Marianne: Delicate and very sweet.
