Re: Portrait Gallery -- July/ August 2011
Thanks everyone for the feedback!
Kevin, yes I'm quite familiar with Ann Gale's work. I even saw a few of her paintings in Portland, Oregon a few years ago. She's so amazing.
I also follow Paul Wright, Tai Schierenberg, Mark Horst, Jenny Saville, Alex Kanevsky, Lucien Freud, and Frank Auerbach. Chelsea James too, even though she does mostly landscapes and interiors.
It's fun trying different things, though I end up throwing most of it away

Re: Portrait Gallery -- July/ August 2011
Harry, thank you so much!
Bethany, from someone who paints with such flourish, 'effortless' is high praise indeed. Thank you for the inspiration
Haha... @ Sandra's 'Gulp'
Here's something I'm not very please with, but posting nonetheless. Again this was from past weeks WDE at D&S, which I finished only a few hours ago. The ref image was kindly provided by Michael Goetze (Michaeleric).
Here's a link to the same at the brush sketch stage.
14" x 11", acrylic on paper.
Thanks for looking!

This Gallery is a feast for the eyes.
Kevin, please, just a suggestion, if you can, make some spare room for paintings like that when you are not happy with... and then we can buy them!
Raeburn, beautiful work!
Larubia, I always admire your wonderful palettes.
Prosenjit, great works. I don`t know why you are not very pleased with your last portrait because is wonderful!. Again, make some spare room for this one so we can buy it!
Thank you all for sharing such beautiful works.
Saludos

Re: Portrait Gallery -- July/ August 2011
That's a luminous one, Larubia!
@ Luicre - haha! I'd need to have lots of spare rooms then Thank you!
@ Sandra - its NOT outstanding, but thank you so much for saying it is Its too contrived, my brush wasn't listening to me that day. It still isn't but I plodded on nonetheless.
So here's another one I finished a few hours ago, about 3 hrs work in all. 14" x 11", acrylic on paper. She's a movie actor from my neck of the woods (or nearabouts) and someone posted the ref in another forum. I guess its okay to do a study sketch.
Thank you for looking!

Thank you Luicre and 123 Harry. I appreciate the comments.
Sandra, Roy P, and Larubia - your work is looking good!
Here's today's palette knife sketch from class, oil on board. I was experimenting with more intense chroma like the expressionists. Still trying to figure out color balance - trickier than I thought. C&C welcome.

Re: Portrait Gallery -- July/ August 2011
Lovely portraits here. Larubia: I love the flesh tones in your child. It looks like a difficult pose to paint-- you are doing well!
Roy: this is a beautiful painting.
I attended my open studio this morning. It was a two hour pose as usual and I could not do the model justice. She was dressed as a cowgirl and even though her mother remarked about how much it looked like her when I was finishes I think I have not made her as cute as she was. Oh well... a good exercise-- anytime one can paint from the live model it is challenging and enlightening.

raeburn: good colours in your sketch. I like the bold approach.
dolardays:lovely colours in this too in a quieter way. you've used the ground colour of the paper well. A lively portrait.

Hia Rae, I dig this ~to me you have achieved here a very convincing portrait in the sense of impressionism and its like hes almost gyrating off the board for me , and I think you have great eyes in seeing color as in relative balance ~I will look for more of your work , I love your style !
