Re: Portraiture Challenge for February 2011

I didn't have time for the challenge last month, but this one I couldn't miss. Its that red hair thing...I picked Nicole because the profile so much reminded me of Sargent's Madame X. So here is the beginning sketch with some of last months tips and pointers thanks to Mr.Loomis and Kevin (the triangle circle thing works). More later.

Sid, that's one of my faves, too, and you've captured her expression beautifully!

Willsart -- you've got a great start!

For those interested in the similarity to Sargent's Madame X, here is a link:

These all look really nice! Alvin you should post in the coloured pencil forum, I really like the way you've used the pencils in your portrait.

Re: Portraiture Challenge for February 2011

How often does one get the opportunity to draw someone that has one brown eye and one green? I wanted to celebrate that, thus the crop.

This is my first submission to the Portraiture forum. I've been hanging in the colored pencil forum, trying to learn. Picked up colored pencils last November and have been having a lot of fun since. Noticed I was passing the opportunity to draw a lot of things because it "had skin in it." I'm determined to get over that. Thanks to George924 for posting a flesh tone tutorial at the colored pencil forum. This is about my 4th attempt at portraits.

You oil painters are lucky in that you can mix color and then apply it. With colored pencil, all the colors have to be applied to the support -- no turning back.

C&C welcome, because I'm seriously trying to learn to improve my work.

Re: Portraiture Challenge for February 2011

A lots of excellence works here. All those lady colors drawings are beautiful. Drawing Nicole is complicate and I might try to drawing her at the end of the challenge.

Lauren: You have cute babies. Please point out to me what you see in your girl's painting are wrong, You will not hurt my feeling. I cann't figure out why the photo looks more orange and spotty than the painting. She looks more pink and smoother. Could it be the lighting enviroment when I took the picture.

Now I see her right eye seems smaller than her left, because I mess up her eye lid when I darken it.

C & C always welcome.

Re: Portraiture Challenge for February 2011

Rosanne: Your pencil Nicole is beautiful and bathing in the sunlinght. Beautiful mood!

Alvin: Your colors on the baby-boy is so appropriate for that age. I like them a lot.

Happy painting.
