Thanks, Jessica! But I already messed it up. I forgot to spray-fix my charcoal before I started painting tonight!

Re: The 7th Annual Portrait Pairings and W.I.P. Thread!

Everyone's starts are looking very good. I love to watch the people develop!

I just returned from a plein air event and I had some greenish umber left on my palette so I decided to sketch out an underpainting in that color. I like this color because it is easy to wipe out for the lights and it is pretty neutral but complimentary to pink skin.

This is sandybells. It is a 12" x 16" piece of linen canvas. She gave me a pretty good picture of her sitting in a dark living room. The composition is nice so I decided to keep the window-- notice how it really "points" to her head. Those are some red roses behind her I think. I plan to just keep the background suggested and work on her face mostly. The glasses are distorting her eyes; this is a problem I frequently see when I use photographs instead of painting form the live model. The lenses seem to magnify the eye and if you know the person it's easy to compensate for -- but if not you are left guessing if you have the eyes the right size. Sandy- if you are reading maybe you could send me a photo in the same position without the glasses on? If not-- we will just make it work.

Nora

Re: The 7th Annual Portrait Pairings and W.I.P. Thread!

Nora she is coming along beautifully!

I started tonight on a greyscale study in pastel before going to oils. I am not very experienced in pastel so this is a learning curve for me. I'm using the pans and some sticks, making a mess, and having fun.

This is about an hour of work. I would like to clarify that Dave is neither ugly nor scary even though my study is at the moment.

Dave
I hope you aren't regretting getting me for a partner!

9x12 pastel on Colorfix... i promise it won't look scary when finished!

Re: The 7th Annual Portrait Pairings and W.I.P. Thread!

Some great starts already and thanks to Kevin for the excellent pointers on taking photos.
Nancy’s portrait by Jeni was such a fast response you must have started on the B of the bang Jeni!

Marvellous 3D sculptural feel to your work Max and Nancy I’m really looking forward to seeing yours develop, great drawing

Good composition Nora the feeling you are developing with your tones is working well.

Hay I recognise those eyes Jessica once you get that nose toned it will fall in to place Looks like I should have trimmed my beard before taking the photo

Got Jessica’s photos this morning and will make a start this evening

Dave

I am very impressed with the starts too. Agnes, I'm almost done with yours too.

Jeni, I am sure your subject will be thrilled with what you are painting. You have gotten a lot of practice lately thanks to that Octet, I think you've grown.
Max, great study! I love how you oil painting people start in all different colors..
Nora, I KNOW yours is going to be good.
Jessica, looks like I'd really enjoy painting Dave too.
I'll post mine soon, you guys need to see some color

Re: The 7th Annual Portrait Pairings and W.I.P. Thread!

Wowser, Mimi!!, Much respect to the watercolourists!!! Ah the self control...... and a cute model too, (Agnes)

Jessica, Journey man is looking good. Dave, you look like an interesting model, what with all that facial hair, good fun!!

Nora, it looks great already!!! And Nancy, I'm intrigued what your talents can achive with that model

I was a bit keen with my first sketch (swot!!) but remember I am on a different time zone to most of you

Nancy, brace yourself, here is the start of my oil, 55x46, Trying to fit the painting in nicely I decided to flip my canvas, and go for a slightly different composition.

I hasten to add this is only blocked in in drippy turps based washes, so please don't panic, Nancy!!! It can only get better!!

Happy painting guys Of to work out what's going on with the angle of the frame..............

Re: The 7th Annual Portrait Pairings and W.I.P. Thread!

This is the beginning of the block-in for Jeni; I'm waiting for this to dry so that I can spray-fix the charcoal and continue (I forgot to do that before starting out!). I'm right-handed, so I'm painting from the upper left to lower right. And no, she doesn't need to see the dentist -- it's easier to get teeth the right color when you start from a neutral tone. Other adjustments to come!

Re: The 7th Annual Portrait Pairings and W.I.P. Thread!

And mine too! Dave i trimmed your beard this morning.

You know, I just keep thinking about what Richard Schmid said in Alla Prima, how he loves to paint men with facial hair! Dave has such a wonderfully expressive face and I can tell what a wonderful person he is from his expression!

Mimi- oh my goodness she is looking wonderful! You sure work FAST! Beautiful work.

Nancy I think you are doing a beautiful job! The smile is so expressive and natural looking...difficult to do!
Jeni I think you have a great start here, the likeness is definitely there.
