Re: Portrait Challenge - November 2010

Randa,
You've done a lovely job with the drapery. The only thing that stood out to me is that in the original the taller girl's feet are positioned more to her left (our right), they line up between her left shoulder and the base of her neck. I don't know if that's worth fixing at this point. Everything else about the drawing and modeling of the forms looks very good to me!

I am doing the little girl's portrait and have similiar issues.
I like your work on mouth and nose, the most challenging part of portrait, their shape is very accurate, and the skin tone is very good.

Anna, Thank you for your feedback on my painting. I hadn't noticed that I had rounded out her jaw until you pointed it out. I'll try and rework it and fix the jaw and right eye if I have time before the end of the month. Looking forward to seeing your progress on the little girl in the Bouguereau painting.

Nancy,
I like to observe and analyze people's work. You see mistakes in other works then check your piece to see that it is wrong too. Somehow, when you post your work the mistakes becomes more obvious. It is really good to see everybody's attempt here, as the topic of the month is really cool and challenging.I hope to complete the girl on the weekend.

Re: Portrait Challenge - November 2010

This is my first attempt at a digital portrait, using a Wacom and Painter 11 which I've recently acquired. It seems relatively easy to use but there are a lot of features to learn in that program. Enjoyable though.

Re: Portrait Challenge - November 2010

There has been some wonderful work posted here, too many to comment on all of them. Like Robert, I have used what time I have to paint my own entry.

Here is my version of Mairen, using both watercolor and gouache on 1/4 sheet 200#CP Saunders Waterford paper.

As I am relatively new to portraiture, I welcome any and all comments.

Thanks for the opportunity to try my hand at this lovely young woman.

Re: Portrait Challenge - November 2010

Hi Artist Friends...
I too had to try to capture Mairen, a very challenging subject. I just couldn't resist that lovely hair! I enjoyed trying to paint this intriguing lady. I wanted very much to add her freckles, but in the end, I just gave up...far too subtle for me!

This is oil on 16 x 12 canvas. About four hours. Most of the colors are Utrecht, bristle brushes except at the very last when I used a few synthetic "sables" for a little blending.

Keep Painting!
Bruce
