Re: September-October 2014 Portrait Challenge!

Nice challenge. I'm a bit late since October is ending and my painting is still unfinished - didn't have the time. Image in the next post (I can't post images yet).

My attempt. I started with a sort of grisaille, because I wanted to experiment with Sennelier tempera colors (raw umber & titanium white). Overpainting in oil.

Re: September-October 2014 Portrait Challenge!

Hi I know I'm late as it's now November.
I've been gone from Wet Canvas for a while and art in general. I thought I'd get back into the swing of things and here's my attempt.

Re: September-October 2014 Portrait Challenge!

Bravo to you all!

Don't worry that it's no longer October -- we aren't locking this thread closed, so feel free to keep the portraits coming!

We will be putting up a new Portrait Challenge (for November- December), but it's fine to have two going -- as well as the annual Portrait Swap.

Portraiture is a busy place this time of year!

Nice portrait, Dave. Thanks for posting the WIP. I'm wanting to learn to use oils, so seeing how others use them helps!

Hi Kate, Just be aware that I posted the WIP as a bad example so others can avoid doing the same

Re: September-October 2014 Portrait Challenge!

Good morning all. I happened upon this thread late, but I figured I'd give it a shot. I have no art education, but I am fairly handy with a pencil. I'm trying to learn how to eliminate line and think in shape. After taking a pic of this sketch, I can see I have a long way to go. I'm not sure If I'll build it up some more or put it on the shelf. If I do, I'll post the progress update.

C&C Welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,

Your approach is working well -- excellent shapes, and you have constructed an excellent likeness here! (I know the model.)
Thanks for posting this.

We aren't closing this thread for a while -- will keep this challenge going.

Re: September-October 2014 Portrait Challenge!

Here is my second try on this challenge, Pastels on Art Spectrum Colourfix paper.
I think I achieved a better likeness on my sketch than on this work.
Oh well every artwork teaches us something , be it a success or failure.

Re: September-October 2014 Portrait Challenge!

Hei all,

This is probably very late but I was looking for some inspiration and I found it in one of the photos of Janine. This is also my first ever attempt at pastel portraits. Paper is Daler-Rowney A3 98lbs. Pastels variously used were Camel Soft Pastels, Mungyo Extra Soft, Sennelier, Derwent Pastel Pencils.
C&C are welcome.
