Re: October 2012 Portrait Challenge -- Mary Cassatt

Yes, Nancy the medium is pastel on Canson paper(not sanded). I tried to stay true to Mary Cassatt's style, and focus mostly on placing the strokes of buttery pastel in layers. I'd like to go back in and soften everything up, with blending and probably will do so. I can see the little dots of paper peeping thru.
This was my first time actually entering a challenge. To say the least, I was a bit frantic with being "locked out," and focused on making deadline.
Now that I'm in, I'll do the necessary retouching, and always critique is welcome as I learn in the medium of pastel!

Re: October 2012 Portrait Challenge -- Mary Cassatt

Hi All! Great studies, everyone. I didn't have time to do a new Cassatt rendering, but remembered I had done a few years ago, so thought I would share them here. Sorry I'm a wee bit late, but since the thread's still here, I thought, "Why not?!"

This one is soft pastels on paper, 19 x 24. I was absolutely thrilled with it until I sprayed it with varnish - some day, maybe I'll go back and brighten it back up - or maybe just do another one!

The next 2 are just pencil sketches on 11 x 14 paper.

Thanks for looking!

Jean

Jean, it's never too late to join in and share a Mary Cassatt delight! I am surprised you sprayed varnish onto a pastel. When I did pastel, I would either put it under glass with a thick mat so it couldn't touch the glass, or I sprayed it with Blair Spray Fix. But if I did the latter I ended up freshening up the pastel because the spray would eat up the pastel!

I love these mother and child works so much!

I agree with Nancy!
No end in sight for this thread -- keep on drawing and painting!
Lots of lovely work on here -- so touching to see all the mothers and children. Well done, all of you!
Thanks for participating!
