Re: October 2012 Portrait Challenge -- Mary Cassatt
Absolutely a favourite artist of mine! Never felt I could do Mary C justice, but just maybe I'll try one, I feel so inspired! Thanks, Lauren. Ez, your painting of the girl is delightful!
Dana your painting of the girl with the straw hat is beautiful, and a favourite of mine, well done.
Happy painting,
Charri

Re: October 2012 Portrait Challenge -- Mary Cassatt
I wish I could find my book on Mary Cassatt...this place is so loaded with books, it pays tribute to the saying that "you can't see the trees for the forest."
Since I can't find it, I did want to say that Cassatt's technique, whether using oil paint or pastels, was to lay down one stroke next to another and not to blend, whether it was pastel or oil paint. I don't use pastel, so I'm going to try to learn from the fresh look of her approach to painting, how to lay in a stroke and leave it alone!
And don't scold me if I fail, because I will really have tried!

Nice work, Ed!
I like that crop.
Nancy -- thanks for the tip about her pastel technique. I want to try a pastel, and it will be a challenge, for sure, as I tend to like to blend... and I'll try not to.

Re: October 2012 Portrait Challenge -- Mary Cassatt
Lauren, if I can't make it work in oils, I'll either do it in charcoal, or check out my pastel supply to see if I have enough colors. I do have a pretty large range of Pan-pastels that I haven't used in a couple of years... by mentioning pastels, you just reminded me of them! I had forgotten them, and my toned pastel paper. Outta sight; outta mind! I will have to hunt them down!

Thank you all. Your words encourage me to do another attempt in this challenge. Funny that some of my works which I don't like - other people like very much...

Re: October 2012 Portrait Challenge -- Mary Cassatt
I have a question regarding the reference pics....are we to only choose from the first ten grouped ? or can we refer to another choice presented? I happened upon Margot in Blue, 1902 in a book by Frank Getlein.
Thanks,
Leanne

Re: October 2012 Portrait Challenge -- Mary Cassatt
ED, Dominika, and Dana... All are very nice representations of Cassatt's work!
I went out to MaryCassatt.org, and decided to do "Sarah in Green Bonnett", still needs work. I haven't gotten the tilt of her head right, and the rest of her costume, but I'm not liking the paper that I'm working on very much....
Here's the reference photo:
and my attempt... 9 x 12 Soft pastels on Bugra Pastel Paper.
