Re: No title at this time

Overall, I like this painting, JMW, and find the wash of the waves very convincing. The wave breaking against the rocks has movement and good direction, and that was where my eye was drawn to at first glance. The lighter foliage seems to act as a secondary focal point.

Compositionally speaking, the cliff dominates too much and I wondered if it would look better if the front edge was dragged back to where the darker section begins, thereby releasing more of the sea and the potential for increased highlights. This would have the added advantage of developing more sky, which is an area that looks rather flat at the mo'. As the painting stands it looks like you've heavily cropped the image from the right, where even the sea surf seems compromised.

The front edge of the cliff is well lit, as is the wave, but the sand does not benefit from this surge of light. It's difficult to establish a time of day but it feels like dusk or something close. Also the foliage would probably have more in the way of shadows I think.

However, my opening comments give my initial and real reaction to this piece, where overall I like it very much for the mood and sense of place it presents.

Best

Bri

Re: No title at this time

I agree about the cliffs being too much. Try dividing the painting into thirds, both ways. You might lighten up the sky some. And possibly apply a little more highlight to the cliffs. However, the one thing that I have the most problem with is the water itself. Maybe it's the brush strokes but, it just doesn't seem to work, at least for me. Water is not such an easy thing to do; I think mostly because it like a living thing; always moving. Seascapes are fun to do so, I would suggest if you plan to do more of these, that you make a study of the different ways the water is moving. Hope this helps.

Re: No title at this time

Since this thread was bumped up recently , I decided to take it off my wall and re address it after all this time..
Sooo, the new version... as it is right now... pretty much reworked the whole thing..
After posting & seeing the photo I have a few more ideas in mind to finish it ..

Re: No title at this time

Yep, completely different!
I say it's an improvement.
First thing that stuck out to me was I cant tell if in the background on right theres more water or if its sky bc the two colors look identical. Some way to separate the two might be helpful.
Also, there seems to be a lot of sand color in the foreground water? Not sure how to read it, like if you're going for transparent shallow water or little juts of land or what.

Re: No title at this time

For better or worse, I changed it up some more..

This is the update..
May take a break on it as I tend to fiddle & keep changing things..instead of calling it done..
A few areas are not final in fg .. and just noticed the photo is slightly slanted..

Re: No title at this time

Good improvements! Nice depth.
The change I didnt like so much was the lightened foreground tone. But you said that part wasnt done yet.
honestly if I hadnt seen the earlier version maybe I wouldnt care, depends on the atmosphere youre going for.
I look forward to the final.

Re: No title at this time

Finally had some time to paint on this one again..still refining it but this is where it is at for now. Little bit of overhead light glare at center top.

Re: No title at this time

This last one compared to the first one is a great advancement; the difference is like night and day. I greatly admire your persistence in going back over and over again to refine this painting. The colors look great, and you seem like you thoroughly examined what colors need to be re-balanced and how to improve upon the composition.

Re: No title at this time

yes I agree, the last is best. If somehow, maybe by adding a little light to the tops of the advancing turf on the sand you could get a little more atmospheric perspective?
