Solitude

This was a very interesting and somewhat discouraging exercise for me. The first image was sketched and painted in about 30 minutes on no-name sketch paper to plan the composition and palette for a larger painting. And I liked it. So I moved on to the second version which was painted on 9x12 140lb CP Fluid paper and I labored over it off and on for three or four hours over several days, hating it every step of the way. It was headed for the bin but will probably keep it as a reminder to lighten my touch and stop fiddling! Paints for both were Mission Gold. C&C welcomed! Oh well...

Re: Solitude

Be not discouraged Kate - the light coming from the right illuminating her dress and hat is great. OK - her shadow is a bit heavy but I like the setting and would certainly not bin it.

Re: Solitude

Thanks for the encouraging comments Zelda, Ernst, Sandie and Mike! Yes Mike, the shadow is way too solid!

Re: Solitude

All you really need to do with the second version, is soften the edges of the main shadow and the arm shadow. Most of the edges on the first version are soft.
