My grandmother

Hello.
This is a portrait of my grandmother.
Oil on stretched canvas 2'x3'
Done in layers with two monochrome underpainting layers and about 3 layers of glazed colour. Some areas have a few more layers.
From about halfway below the knees is not in the photo so I had to make it up. I decided to leave the feet sort of unfinished for this reason. Her dress is a single 9-yard long silk cloth which she wore on her 80th birthday.

Re: My grandmother

Lovely sari. Nice folds in the fabric. I like the yellow, pinks and oranges together. I saw a lot of sari's with this color combination when I was in India, but it is rare to see this color combination in the west. Only at easter.

your chair and her feet are floating. You need some shadows to ground them.

Re: My grandmother

Your portrait seems to capture the lady's strong character. The dress is very well done. Nice portrait.
I feel the need for an element of strong blue....a suggestion of sky? Purely a personal opinion of course.

Re: My grandmother

@alan: Thanks so much for looking and commenting!
@AllisonR: Thanks for pointing out the missing shadows in the bottom. I will definitely keep that in mind as I work in the future. I see what a visible difference it can make.
@carolkay: Many thanks for your kind comment.
@123harry: The original photo was taken outdoors - no sky visible - but maybe thats why you feel the need for the blue? In selecting a background, I made the rather conservative choice of browns. I am trying to move away from browns and grays into more colorful choices. Appreciate any tips in how to select an appropriate background color that doesn't distract from the subject. Thanks for your observations; they give me perspective.

Re: My grandmother

Does she have any outside activities that she might be pausing from to look up and smile while doing? In example, some sort of large shallow bowl at her feet or on a table next to her would look right at home, then you could do something a bit more simple with the sky and ground after that

Beautiful job with the painting

Re: My grandmother

Awesome! Very fine work, pleasant colors and fine detailed.
A shadow on the left hand looks less realistic.

Re: My grandmother

@Justadude: Nice idea about adding other objects into the setup. Resolving light and shade will be a bit of a challenge but I'm sure I can work on it.
@Dcam: Thanks for stopping by!
@mariposa-art: Thank you very much.
@Gigalot: Are you talking about HER left hand? That shadow you are referring to might be her lymphoma.
