I couldn't wait better colour for the background. I love this grey blue. And its very difficult in something so complex to make light or dark tones at big surface. Your skills are in other level!

Thanks for the update!

Do you have a particular type of white you prefer for this layer?

Thanks Vasilios, you are so right about getting the lighting and color right with big sweeping (but subtle) gradations. I almost think I should've pre-mixed and tubed all these colors to keep completely consistent, but I just mix and paint every day for each section separately. So far it's working out.

Actually I do. It's a 1/2 lead white, 1/2 titanium. This way I can scrub in a little bit and be mostly transparent (seen in the 'Home Sweet Home' area and in the flesh of the lemon) or apply it normally and be more opaque (seen in the pith of the lemon) Thanks!

Thanks Derek, it kind of is like diving into the deep end after a pretty satisfying underpainting. But it's also satisfying to add color, and seems to impress people more than just a brown painting

Thanks Allison, it's going to take a while but I'm hoping to keep it to less than 18 months this time

Thanks Bill, gotta slog through all these subtle background tones before I get to some more-fun stuff like the flower petals and the glass dish. Thanks again!

I can no longer paint this way, it's just too tedious. Give me painterly!!!!!
Slash it smudge it paint with your fingers, just make it work.

Whatever works…for you. You paint your way, I'll paint mine. Personally, I find the more precision exemplified in a painting, the more I look at it.

Not to say that looser paintings don't impress me, but it's just not how I want to express myself.

Sometimes, not always, being 'painterly' is like saying (if you're a musician) 'I play with feel'… a.k.a. 'I don't need to be technically proficient'. I simply choose to be as artistically expressive and physically precise as I can be

Thanks to both for your comments!

Re: 'My Own Personal Minions', a new WIP

Hey everybody, happy new year!
Thought I'd take a day to get some new pix up here on WC. Much work has been done, but I've had some problems (see my post on paint darkening when drying!) that I'm trying to work around. Some items are done, and some have been left at a stage that may look done but aren't. I'll explain after the first pic - the whole painting:

So the background's mostly done but I have to go over a few places in the design where the paint has been drying darker than it goes on. Plus I need to put the shadows in on the bottom of the 'Home Sweet Home' picture.

Many places on the background look spotty due to oiling-out of areas that I painted over; that will all look uniform when those places fully dry, or at the latest when I varnish it. Not worried about that.

The very blue-violet base where the vase/dish are sitting is mostly done, painted in a loose style to approximate the look of the dull, velour-like fabric I used there. I didn't want to paint it in flat tones, looked too boring, so I went kinda Van Gogh here, with little dabs of paint. I will go back and refine it at a later date, just wanted it good enough for now.

Without further ado, the next pic, highlighting this area and some of the green grapes:

Had a good time with the grapes, had to 'warm up' all my greens with a lot of browns. Mostly used 2 yellows (Cad yellow and yellow lake), a sap green, yellow ochre, burnt umber, some neutral grays, and some white in the lightest parts.

Next up is the flower and the base layer for the 'Home Sweet Home' pic:

This is a real crappy pic of the flower, it looks so much better in real life, had a blast here too, used 4 different reds plus white here. Alizarin, Scarlet lake, Cad red, and Magenta. Lot of work getting the highest chroma possible out of these paints for the right colors, too bad the photo doesn't do it justice.

The background pic just has a base layer of a kinda fleshy color, which I will leave as is and then detail the rest of the picture frame (just have the border in now) and the Death Star/flower inner border/words.

The last pic is some of the glass vase and some work on some of the leaves:

Lot of hard work here too, getting all the various greens in the leaves is pretty tough, and the glass distortion plus all it's subtle reflections is hard (but fun!) work. Another crappy picture, but it at least shows the glass effect coming together.

Anyway, that's it for now, happy new year again, and as always any comments or questions are welcome. See you in a month or so,

Cheers!
=A=

Alan, the grapes and rose really pop out in comparison to the blues and browns, it is very much a Maxfield Parrish effect, so beautiful to see your progress and thanks for sharing your palette. Tha Van Gogh dabs are very clever, gets you heading where you want to go, without laboring over it.
