Second Scratchboard - Lioness.

Hi folks,
It has been some time since I posted my very first scratchboard (the collie rough). Been a little crook for awhile, which is really annoying when trying to do your art!.
Below is a photo of my second scratchboard, which is on 8 x 10" Ampersand board. The majority of scratching is done with the pointed nib from the Ampersand toolkit, which was still a little blunt from the collie board!!.

I know it's far from 'Purr-fect', and I'm not 100% happy with the board and my photography 'sucks', even with the beautiful new camera hubby bought me!, a Sony a230.
Sorry to say that I didn't do a proper drawing again, getting lazy! - this led to so many problems, but I am so glad that this is such a forgiving medium, where you can move things about a bit!!.

I chose a reference photo which mostly showed quite a lot of hair detail, although some areas I had to guess the length of the hair.. (I hadn't seen a live lion in over 25 years!).
I must confess that this board was quite a challenge in the hair direction department!. Being a detail 'freak' though, I loved the 'torture'.

I've possibly gone overboard in some areas, probably to the extent that I may have ruined the board, but that's just me, I love detail!. I haven't cleaned or sprayed the board as yet, so if anyone sees anything that needs fixing please let me know. Thanks for looking. I will post a few close-ups later on - the best I can do with my terrible photography anyway!!.

The reference photo comes from the great photographer and world traveller Andrew Ross, under a Creative Commons licence.

Sorry about the greasy finger marks!.

Oh, she is so soft and alive! I love her chin and the whiskers!

Wow! This is really great fur texture. Please keep it up. I see nothing ruined! I would just work the detail in the nose more then sign it!

Wow you've achieved a softness and real-ness to her fur that I don't think I've seen before! Completely amazed at how you've done that.

I agree with Ltaniea. I have never seen fur that looked that soft before. Great job!

Gee you're harsh on yourself. From here it looks superb and will only get better with spraying

Re: Second Scratchboard - Lioness.

Oh boy, I'm in shock; I apologise for the group thank you, but I'm lost for words, you just dont know what these lovely comments mean to me, particularly coming from such a great group of fantastic artists. Thanks so much Diana, Susan, Robert, Karen, Jenny, L'taniea and Victor. I hope I didn't miss anyone. I must confess that this board was a challenge and took a long time to do, especially being a smallish board!. Lots and lots of scratches and very hard on the eyes!, but I was determined to improve on my work after the collie board!.
Hi Susan sadly the reference photo didn't show any details of the nose, it was just black with no details. I looked at hundreds of lion photos on the internet and couldn't find a close-up of the nose at this angle so not exactly sure how much of the nostril would be showing... So I am a little stuck in this area!. I wont spray the board until I can fix the nose.
Cheryl.

I'm still in shock, so many lovely comments that I didn't expect - coming from such fantastic artists, thanks so much Patrick, Brett and Hector.
Hi Patrick - You know the phrase: "Less is more", I had this echoing in my head while I did this board, and that's why I thought I may have been overdoing the scratching and ruining the board!.

Thanks again to all for the inspiration and kind words.
Cheryl.

Re: Second Scratchboard - Lioness.

Cheryl... You've done a superb job with this lioness... As all have mentioned before, you have given her a very soft fur, making the viewer forget it is a two dimensional work and not something soft/textured that one can reach out and feel...

Diane

Re: Second Scratchboard - Lioness.

Dianne - I dont want to sound like a broken record or too ditsy, but thank you so much for your very kind words... coming from another fantastic artist I admire. You have all inspired me and made me feel that I made the right decision in taking up scratchboarding. Thank you.
Cheryl.
