Post Project Discussion: Altered CD's !

A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Altered CD's !
Project Leader: lisilk
Relative Difficulty: Easy
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Mixed Media
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Welcome to the first Altered CD Project !

Do you have a drawer full of old music CD's or freebie computer disc's gathering dust? Then wipe them off and join me in turning junk into art. Altered CD's are fast becoming the new wave for collage and altered book artists. Lightweight, small and sturdy, the disc's make a perfect "canvas" for embellishment.

The disc's can be sanded or gessoed to make attaching collage elements easier. You can paint them, stamp them, attach handmade papers, transfers, or drill holes for beads. Inks and embossing powders also work well. Let your imagination run wild. The small size also makes it quick and easy to try new techniques you've been eyeing. If you are very ambitious, you can even add them to a papier mache' sculpture !

Share your process in the progress gallery so we can learn from your creativity.

Please look through the links I've provided for tutorials and fresh ideas. Special thanks to WC! members Shari and Joe Majury for inspiring this project.

Have fun!

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Since this and your other pieces inspired this project, I am glad it's the first entry. I already gushed over this in another thread. It's gorgeous ! Thanks for explaining the process again for those new to this sort of thing ( me )

Thanks for the encouragement and for starting this project. I can't wait to see what everyone does. I spent several hours this evening working on some new ones. On some of them, I just love the colors so much, that I don't want to put anything else on them. I think I am going to make a global journey with some of them. I will post some next week!!!

Re: Project Discussion: Altered CD's !

Russell,Kali, and Gudrun,

So glad you joined the project ! Can't wait to see what we all come up with.

I primed three CD's today but now that we are flu free ( finally ) ..we will be skiing tomorrow so will have to work on them at night.

Shari- I can tell by your work that you have some experience with stamping and heat set inks. Perhaps altered books or scrapbooking ? Your pieces look so professional already. Can you give us any tips ?

I think this will be an interesting learning journey for all of us.

Thanks for joining the project !

Cheers,

Li

P.S. Should really start calling our projects.....The Usual Suspects ! LOL.

Re: Project Discussion: Altered CD's !

Li,

I have done a few art journals, and soon I will take pics and post some of those, as well as a few altered books, which are BIG FUN!!! I haven't used my rubber stamps for a couple years, since I started painting with pastels but I thought they would be perfect for the CD's, so it's been like Christmas going through all of them and remembering what I have. Stamping is so easy, the ink dye just air dries pretty well, but can be heat set with a heat gun for a minute or so, OR, you can stamp with pigment pads which take much longer to dry, then they can be sprinkled with embossing powder and set with a heat gun. Embossing powders are fun and come in all kinds of colors and thicknesses. On these CD's that I am doing, I am also using a combination of acrylics by Jacquard such as Lumiere and Neopaque as well as Pinata inks which are an alcohol-based immediate drying ink in a bottle. I am not as happy with those as with the acrylics though. I do recommend a final spray coating over the acrylics when the disk is done as the acrylics can be sticky for a long time even when they seem dry. I use found objects or little things I made, shells, buttons, clay items, ephermera, little charms from the bead store, etc., you name it, anything goes. Sometimes I start with an idea, or else I don't know what the heck I am doing and it just evolves as it wants to.

For me, art journals are a great way to express, because I am not much of a writer, so a word or two to express an idea, and then a visual to go with it often says more for me than a whole page of words.

Okay, I will shut up now.

Shari

Shari,

Don't shut up. LOL. It's all good information for people new to stamping and journaling. I knew you must have some history because your first CD's were so well done. Thanks for sharing the info. Looking forward to seeing more.

Cheers,

Li

Thanks for joining the project.

Re: Project Discussion: Altered CD's !

Gosh!! People are already posting finished projects! I have some ideas and started experimentation last night when I should have been sleeping. I tried different methods of cutting them. Warming them before cutting first seems to help reduce cracking and shattering. I have had good success by scoring them on the back side with a tool for scoring plexiglass. A glass cutting tool works but takes extra effort. An old pair of scissors works also.

Knowing Gudrun's and Kali's art works; I am anxious to see what they do.

Thank you Li for starting this!
