Giant Spider

Sometime in the mid nineties, the owners of HOLLYWOOD TOY AND COSTUME asked me if I could build a giant spider that could be attached to the front of the building and I accepted the challenge.

I told them it would be cool to make a "monster movie spider" like the kind seen in Catwomen of the Moon. Of course, they had NO idea what I was talking about so I showed them pictures and they thought the Wah Chang design would be cool.

The spider was molded by me out of fiber glass and resin and built over an armature the bottom of which was of right angled steel which fitted onto one of the vertical iron girders of the building's front. It was actually attached by a Korean sign company.

It's been over twenty years and the damn thing's still up there. It has withstood rain, wind, earthquakes....it's bullet proof.

Re: Giant Spider

That is majorly cool! You accepted the challenge and exceeded the expectation, here lasting all this time with no damage. Also, looks like the bright red colors are still strong. Good job on that. It probably has attracted a lot of attention and customers for that business. Fun piece!

Re: Giant Spider

Are the eyes made of glass or plastic, perhaps a car's red turn signal lights?

Re: Giant Spider

The eyes are red plastic half spheres, which were originally clear plastic and I spray painted the insides with enamel so there wouldn't be any wear and weathering over time. The funny thing about this is that pigeons won't get near it. I guess they think it's real.

That is way cool! Good idea to paint the eyes on the inside, not only to protect the paint, but to make them look more realistic, with clear corneas to catch and reflect light. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Giant Spider

Great idea about painting the inside of the eyes!! Quite a compliment from the pigeons to be scared off and nice show of respect to not defamate it!
