Sheltie

Saw this dog on vacation. Matter of fact saw him twice in the same day other places. Had to take photos of him. He was beautiful. I hope I caught him. Painted him last night. Any suggestions on improvements are taken with great appreciation

8 x 10 pastel on suede board.

Re: Sheltie

You are probably too young to remember the show "Lassie". A show about a boy and his Collie. That was my first thought, and I smiled . Shelties are just smaller, but their coats are just as beautiful. So you have captured the beautiful color of his coat and long nose quite nicely. If I were to make a suggestion, since I've painted a few dog portraits from my photos, there may be a bit more brown in the lower half of the eye. It just shows blackish in our photos. I Googled images of the breed of dog (or any dog, really) and found close-ups of the eyes that show they are brown. I know that helped me.

Re: Sheltie

I like the changes you made to the eyes! You described the soft, fluffy fur so well too. Very nice work!

Re: Sheltie

Hi luvy, you've done an excellent job on the fur textures. A little tip: Long nosed dogs painted front on can appear to have quite flattened noses, painting them in 3/4 view is usually better. Where this can't be avoided making sure that the nose is spot on in focus and has a shiny highlight on top and perhaps small highlights in the nostrils will bring it forward.
