Re: Welcome to What's On Your Easel......June 2018

Thank you Barb! No one was as surprised as I that I pulled it off. One of the first things I was taught when I started painting was to mimic the texture on the decomposed granite that is so prevalent here. Basically I make a ball out of old terry cloth towel, dip it into a mix of paint, dab it onto the canvas, and try not to to create 'patterns' in the process.

to mtpalms: amazing transformation of the rock, especially if it was a conscious attempt to build up a purple base as an under painting to contrast it so nicely with the earth hues painted over it. Also, I like how you deviated from the photo to create your own, unique artistic rendering of the scene.

Thank you. I try not to be a slave to the photos I work off of for the sake of composiiton, yet still have a recognizable scene. As a rule, a photograph never quite looks the same as the scene as we remember it, anyway.

12X12 oil on canvas

Practice for a future 21X26 painting. First time using Black Gesso for my surface.

Great study, Jae, the reflections are really nice.

Small update:

All of these need several more layers of revision, but put down the base layer of the dress today.

Got a chance to work on the larger version, 21X26 Oil on MDF board. Got the background trees to work out the way I wanted. Spread the sap green undercoat much much thinner than on my first 12x12 study.
