Ethiopian Icons in distemper/glue-paint?

Does anyone here use rabbit-skin-glue rather than egg-yolk for binder with their powdered pigments?

I've been reading about this distemper technique, which was often used in painting icons in the 15th and later centuries in Ethiopia.

Any interest, informative sites, book recommendations would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: Ethiopian Icons in distemper/glue-paint?

The first I heard of the technique was from reading about the "Nabis" group of artists in the early 20th century France (Bonnard, Vuillard, and Denis among others.) They used hide glue distemper, taking the idea from theatrical set painters and muralists of that period. Vuillard used the medium almost exclusively. There's a brief mention of it in Bernard Dunstan's book "Painting Methods of the Impressionists."

Thank you, David, for your reply. I am amazed by the work of Vuillard, and have ordered some books of his art; appreciate your suggestion.
