I recently perused a used copy of Frank Covino’s book “Controlled Painting” I purchased several years ago. It has very enlightening information on chroma, painting foreground and background, the hues of sky according to the time of day, etc. Of particular interest to me were his color charts based on Alfred Munsell’s color wheel on which he incorporates hue, value and chroma in an organized fashion. However, many of his value strings require the use of liquitex oil pigments which have been out of production for many years. Does anyone know of a way to re-create Covino’s charts using currently available oil colors?
Thanks,

July 8, 2018 at 2:23 pm #654562The question is, I suppose, if what Rembrandt manufacturers call “sap green” for instance, assuming they have it, matches liquitex “sap green” specified By Frank Covino–I have seen very different gradations of hues for naples yellow, for example, among various brands.

I saw on a couple of websites around Covino workshops that any good quality paint wil do however to paint in the Covino way, they mentioned Utrecht, Sennelier, Old Holland etc.
