Re: Gimp stitch tutorial...U Got one?

Another example, I have now just put all of us scratchboard artists out of business by creating a scratchboard from a photo with about four clicks.

This photo from my recent trip to San Diego Zoo

In Gimp, I went to filters/edge detect/edge and then click the drop down 'algorithm' bar and went to 'Laplace' and hey presto, an instant scratchboard, much better than I can do. I've noticed this works better for some photos than others and better on higher resolution photos too

Don't shoot me

This is a good reason to keep track of your work in WIP photos, lolol. Won't take long for someone to try to sell these as reproductions of their scratchboad works.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems this thread should probably be a "sticky". I know I'll be referring to it for many months to come! Who's in agreement?

Re: Gimp stitch tutorial...U Got one?

I'm on my iPad so I'll try that later Jack. Many thanks, it would be great to have something simple though once you are practiced with Gimp, it's also simple. All those steps really only take me a few minutes. Like you say, the scanning takes the longest, but I look forward to trying yours out

Matt, I've put this as a link in the tools and tricks sticky. Hopefully that will do.

Re: Gimp stitch tutorial...U Got one?

My scanner (Epson V30) also came with some software, one is a stitch program. But I can't figure it out yet....I am so used to GIM that I will probably continue with it.

Re: Gimp stitch tutorial...U Got one?

I'm converted!!!!!!!!!!!! Ignore this whole tutorial I did. Jack, you annoying bloke! Where were you before I did this whole tutorial??

Ok, Jack's link is more than worthwhile. You install the program, then it asks you to install something else to make it work, and then you try to install it again and it asks you to install something else. Then you try for the third time and you finally have everything you need. This may be different on different computers but on my old thing, that's what happened.

Then you open up the program "Microsoft Ice", click "file/new panorama" and then navigate to your scans. Click the first scan, hold your left click button down and press the shift key and go to your last scan so that all your scans are selected, then you open all of them up. The program literally does everything else for you. You then click "Export to disc" and it will save you a perfectly stitched image in the same folder as your scans. The one it did for me had absolutely no unsightly edges - it had perfectly stitched the scans together and this is what I got from four scans

So Jack, did you read this bit?

If Pamela did that for me when I told her the hard way to do it, I think you'd better make certain there ain't no loved ones around because I reckon Pamela is going to give you a massive wet smacker on the lips!!!!

And I might too!!

I've edited the tools and tricks sticky to reflect this program rather than my Gimp tutorial. Should I even leave my tutorial in here since I have no need to ever use that part of it anymore?

Re: Gimp stitch tutorial...U Got one?

I want to try out that new program, but it doesn't say anything about MAC. I'm assuming it won't work for me, then?

Re: Gimp stitch tutorial...U Got one?

Oh yes Patrick leave your toutorial up as well! You never know, maybe this new one will not work with someones operating system OR maybe they just like a little more hands on operations. I did try the new one and I have to keep trying as it worked for a couple but not for another...Still have to tweek the outer edge on the ones that did work not sure why it was uneven as they were scanned the same size. Will try the gimp to see if I do in fact like the control better! So please do leave it up!
