Hi all, at long last, my mungyos have arrived.
I must say, I’m quite pleased with them. They go down rather smoothly and have a very good opacity. I’ve started a drawing with them as the first layer, and was quite pleased to see that they work on top of the neopastels and holbeins. Not sure they’d work on top of the senneliers, though. Their firmness makes them better suited for fine detail. So all in all, I can say I’m quite pleased.
About the cons: The 48-stick set is really nothing special in terms of color range, and I’m missing more browns/ ochres, but that’s OK, since I have other oil pastels as well. I also noticed that they generate quite a bit of crumbs. But all things taken to account- the cost about 23$, and with shipping it amounted to 35$- less that 1$ a stick- I’m pleased.

I did a little comparison of yellows. Yellows are tricky because they usually have low opacity compared to other colors. I compared the mungyos to the neopastels, the cre-pas specialists, senneliers and holbeins (with the holbeins the comparison is not really fair because I only have 2 tints of oxide yellow which are different from the other colors I checked). I found the mungyos as good as, if not a bit better, than the neopastels. They did crumble a little, so part of the opacity is actually the crumbs, but still, really good. The specialists did poorly as expected, which kind of explains why I don’t like them- when you work on black paper, opacity issues are critical.
My big surprise was the senneliers. I remembered them as being rather transparent, but they ended up being the most opaque of all.

So there you have it. Glad I bought the mungyos, they probably aren’t my favorite oil pastels, but as far as quality vs. price, they are the best..

Congrats on the purchase, Tali! I’m so happy that you’re pleased with them – I had a feeling you would be.

No, they’re not perfect, and I agree with you about the browns. Even in their full set, I prefer Neopastel and Senns browns to Mungyos. They do have some neat ochres, though. And lovely grays.

For the money, they are awesome little workhorses that play well with others, at a big savings. What’s not to love?

Looking forward to seeing your first painting(s) with them!

Thanks Christel and Terri. I’m looking forward to using them.

Let me tell you a secret- as I said before my 40th birthday is looming across the corner, and people tend to go crazy when they turn 40. So I also bought myself a set of the pentel oil pastels (the good ones). I’ll let you know how I like them.
