Baptism of the Lord Icon WIP

This is my favorite icon and hope I am doing it justice. Sitting it aside for a little while before completing gold and silver leaf on the halos. Acrylic on gessoed birch board, 12x18.

Absolutely gorgeous! May I ask where did you learn how to do iconography-gold and silver foil, etc.? I really like the way you represented the water and fish. The entire icon is awesome. Thanks. You inspire me to try acrylics.

Re: Baptism of the Lord Icon WIP

Hi Audrey. Thanks so much for dropping in. I learned iconography by attending workshops with iconographers Philip Zimmerman, Raymond Calvert and Irene Perez. Philip is in the Pennsylvania area and is an orthodox iconographer who gives frequent workshops in acrylic. You can check his website. Irene is in Texas and travels about as well but all of her workshops are using egg tempera. She also has a website. Raymond is local and only gives workshops in Louisiana at St Joseph Abbey each May. Matthew Garrett is also excellent and has a website. The gold leafing techniques are easy and I learned them as part of these workshops. Hope this helps.

Hi Mamalynn, yes this helps. I will check out websites, thanks for the names. I'm not near any of those states-but maybe will find someone closer. Like in Omaha or Sioux City. Something tells me I won't get too far without a teacher. A ways back, I was at the oldest Russian Orthodox Church in North America (16oo's) up in Unalaska, Alaska and the mass was beautiful=in 3 languages and all sung. The icons were the first I'd seen in real life. I'd very much like to try my hand at this. So many thanks, looking forward to seeing your completed work with the gold and silver leaf.
