Creative Irons in the Fire - How Many?

I tend to have quite a few! Probably far too many. Sometimes I resolve to narrow it down, but then other times it grows. And I admit to being one of those "Hey look, a shinee!" people.

In answering the poll, count any creative pursuit that is a big part of your life - music, sewing, crafting, cosplay, writing, etc., as well as visual art areas. As long as it's something you make or do - for example, making steampunk items counts, just reading steampunk books doesn't (even though it's fun).

Say a few words, too, about how focused you are with them, and if you have some "majors" and "minors" if you have several. Is it easy or difficult for you to resist the urge to take on another creative area? Are you a specialist or a generalist?

creatively i just oil paint, teach oil painting and write

unless you count sarcasm and sexual innuendo, but i categorize those more as language extensions than creativity extensions

Mine are painting, printmaking and collage. and I count them as different because the work that comes out in each one is totally different. It just happens that way. Usually I do one of them at a time because each has its own mindset. Right now it's printmaking after being away from it doing painting for about 10 months.

I probably have too many. I have to group them into categories - traditional art, mixed media, digital art, needle arts, music, and so on.

Re: Creative Irons in the Fire - How Many?

I voted 6-10.

I am working on at least three paintings right now, and a bunch of pen and ink drawings for a new artist's book. The first chapter is finished, plus a few of the other drawings for the other three chapters are done. There are 60 drawings in all. I have 22 more to go.

Then I have been working on a novel for the past 3.5 years. It's an autobiography, but I am calling it "creative non-fiction" because I hate the word "autobiography" and sorta don't like the idea of it being a "memoir" either.

I am also finally finishing up the last of the binding for my last artist's book, which I thought I was done with, until I realized that one of them didn't fit into the slip covers I made. Oops!

And I still need to make the original drawings in the fronts of the chapbooks I made, in which I have sold half of already. It is an edition of 50 and I knew most of the 25 people I sold them to, so I made "special" drawings in those as I was selling them. The next 25 are empty and now I need to make 23 new colored pencil drawings in those that are not exactly custom, but just as special for whoever winds up buying them - if they are sold, or if I wind up sitting on them for a long time. Either way, I don't consider them finished until I do that.

I also have a tiny 3 x 3 inch project that is a kind of "secret Santa" thing for my critique group, but it doesn't need to be done until January 14th.

I almost forgot that I still have to finish making the ID "specimen" tags for a handmade edition of soft sculptures that I put inside of glass Erlenmeyer flasks. There are six "designs" in all, and 12 in the edition for each. I have two more to finish, more or less, on those tags - minus a couple since I sold two full sets.

That's probably more than 6-10, but that's what I picked since, even though I have multiples within the projects, they are singular projects.

Re: Creative Irons in the Fire - How Many?

Drew from 6 years old to age 20 (approx).
Dropped that and painted, from then to now.
Only oil paint. Only one painting at a time. Only one creative activity.
After that, I do yoga and read and that’s it.
I’m as boring as a human can possibly be…but very focused and disciplined.
Well, boring/focused/organized externally speaking.
What happens inside my head is another matter, a different story.
But I suppose it all ends up balancing - inside out and outside in.

Re: Creative Irons in the Fire - How Many?

I wanted to vote for both 1-2 main ones and too many to count. I limit myself to max 3 projects/paintings at once. Otherwise it gets too disorganized. I am very focused on painting.

But I have 3-4 more paintings or other art pieces that I am working on the idea phase, the sketch phase… Plus I inadvertently do a lot of photo taking and editing, some for actual projects, some for possible ideas, some just for fun. And I have ideas that are years or decades old, that I haven't gotten to yet. I also write sometimes. And I cook at lot, which I consider creative as I am constantly trying new recipes, experimenting with new food… I am usually helping my kids with one of their projects. I'm on the stirring committee of a local art group, organizing our next big show. I am starting up my own art shop again in town in January, so a lot of promotional stuff has to be made. Also promo stuff for a group show I will be organizing and curating in April. I'm sure I have forgotten some things.

Re: Creative Irons in the Fire - How Many?

I have six main irons, but sometimes there's more than that. It's hard to find the time to really indulge in an episode of a solitary manic art fest. I recently devised a creative work schedule to use as a guideline. Since my moods dictate which creative pursuit I indulge in, I found that aspects of my creative life were being left out of my life! I have not found the perfect balance using this guideline, but I do feel more in touch with that which allows me to express myself through creativity.

Re: Creative Irons in the Fire - How Many?

My things right now are just art and school. I also run but that's not a creative endeavour...

Drawing, planning, and painting are all I do. I seem to have an average of 4 oil paintings at once. Right now they aren't big, but during school I have size requirements (4x3 ft minimum) so they take all of my time as a single layer might have to be done over a few days.

Re: Creative Irons in the Fire - How Many?

Yes, I also have irons within irons, so to speak - multiple projects within each category. I have to admit it does get confusing keeping track of it all, but it's handy if one painting is drying to have another to switch to if I'm still in painting mode, for instance.

Same with my writing and sewing. Certain crafting areas I might only have one or two projects going at a time.

Re: Creative Irons in the Fire - How Many?

I used to. Now I have switched to one because like Tribbles, that one reproduces trouble in the blink of an eye. There's all this making websites, hunting for galleries, calling around, meeting people etc., associated to that one. I do some sketching when I first start, but have dropped painting for the most part. I have also let go of my fantasy (-ies) of being Anne Rice Jr., travelling the world by bicycle, creating great architecture, living in the woods in a Hobbit house, and the rest. I am contemplating doing some "modern art" type paintings for my own house, but these are private and not to be sold. (Strangely I am this traditional western/animal sculptor whose house is filled with mid century modern.)

Oh as far as other irons in the fire I presume you mean art? I do a million other things as well. Art is one of my jobs.

Creative irons in the fire - which I realize is pretty broad. You could substitute "The Arts" for creative if that works better for you. Some of what I do isn't in the fine art category, or at least not the way I'm engaged with it at present. It may change.

Re: Creative Irons in the Fire - How Many?

Three is probably the most I'm going to let myself do for now. I have one big painting I've been working on since the beginning of October and every now and then I've been taking a break from that to do something quick. I have trouble sticking with things to completion if I load too much onto my plate so when I already have something on the go I tend to resist the urge to start anything new until it becomes unbearable!

Writing used to be my main creative endeavor, but it takes so darned long! I am very slowly working on a novel right now, mainly for relaxation at bedtime to take my mind off the day.

Re: Creative Irons in the Fire - How Many?

Interesting. I categorized by "Types of things" rather than "Number of projects."

I went 3 to 5 because I'm working on becoming a self supporting writer and doing art that supports that career but isn't my main income - writing about art. Third is actually, a long project that's a graphic novel. I thought I wasn't working on it right now but got some ideas on it last night.

Now if I counted different genres and mediums it'd be way way up there in "too many to count." Is blogging a creative pursuit separate from novel writing? Is memoir separate from novel writing? Is art instruction? Reviewing art supplies?

Some of this is "how to look at it" because I could have just said 1 or 2: Writing and Art, with them intersecting in interesting ways from artist-protagonists in fiction to writing about art to reviewing art supplies. The graphic novel counts as its own partly because I just bought an Impact book on comics art and it's so different - and so is the scripting for it, it's scripting which is nothing like what I do writing novels and stories.

I voted too many to count as this is very true.

The ideas come thick and fast, but with no serious time management skills to keep them in check and no order of priority. I have several graphic novels going all at once. One though I've made considerable progress on I might add and of course there are other creative pursuits that happen to infringe on my much needed family time...it's finding the right balance for sure!
