This is an old photo of a pair of wood ducks that I made for a lamp as a gift for my parents in the late 1960’s. The ducks are wood ducks, but not really “wood” ducks. However, the base was wood, and had a carved border around the edge which isn’t very visible in the photo.
The birds as well as the “tree” trunk they were on, was made of Styrofoam with auto body filler for the outside. Then they were carved to give details to the “branch” and the two wood ducks. They were then painted with oil paints. :crossfingers:

Sorry Carly, I’m having fun with the Wetcanvas program…it has suddenly decided to give me grief for the last few weeks. I’m getting a bit of a work around that still gives me a bit of grief but it eventually seems to toe the line.

These two ducks remind me of when I learned to ride a bike…it was common to say “Look maw, no hands”.
These ducks don’t say it but “Look maw, no feet.” That was an extravagance that they would never receive. :cat:

Wow! I can only imagine the work that went into those. Love the way they are sitting on the branch!

These are awesome. Thought they were wood carvings . Never realised Styrofoam could be carved like that. Amazing work.:)

The Styrofoam is very roughly carved but the body filler is the real piece of work and when it hardens it can be worked with some type of grinder or file and smoothed by some kind of grinder and sandpaper, then painted.

                                                Thanks for your kudos!

A lot of work to it for but the end result is worth it I am sure.
