Hails from Greece
Hello from Syros, Greece

Hi, It's taken me long enough but I have finally taken the plunge and signed up here - I'm delighted but very nervous about joining such an accomplished and well established community!

I am a British artist who lives on a beautiful Greek island. I don't paint or produce work nearly as much as I would like due to pressure of work/bills/life but this year I have been making a concerted effort to launch my online business with two websites which I hope will become part of a small group showing different collections. I'll post them up when I have got enough posts.

My prints are selling which is fantastic, I seem to be priced about right for these larger ones. I have however fallen for ACEOs in a big way and am here to try and learn about how to sell them, I'm terrified of Ebay and Etsy so I hope to make some new friends and get some good advice!

I've got some nice pics of the ones I have already done and hope to be posting around the forum in the next week or so with my various questions and concerns. I hope to launch on Ebay and Etsy at least around the end of this month. I'm also a resourceful person and hope I will be able to share some of my own experience and knowledge to help others out.

Re: Hello from Syros, Greece

Thank you very much Virginia! I have just been checking out your blog and it is inspirational. I really mean that. I love those Independence Day posts you have done, it's given me an idea for October when it is Greek Oxi Day (the Day the Greeks Told the Nazis to Take a Hike). I might do something similar if you don't mind me borrowing the idea (with a link to you :-D).
And your dog is adorable!
I've been painting and image-making for a looong time but taking these first steps online is so traumatic. I am so grateful for the welcome.

Welcome! I love your art, it really does justice to Syros. I am in love with that island. I first saw it from the boat on the way to Myconos (ahem...) and ever since I have been visiting it almost every year. Eat a halvadopita for me, will you?

Thank you! How lovely to find someone else here from Greece. I found Syros the same way, it was a memory in my mind from passing on the boat (en route to/from Mykonos too - I was living there in one of the mills at the time). I made a painting of it, my first, without knowing it was the memory I was painting (it's here, on an old blog of mine: http://paintingsbygina.wordpress.com...rn-unfinished/
and without knowing it was not just a memory but a premonition. 17 years later I came to live here almost as a refugee. Syros is defined by beauty and kindness of the purest kind. It's a very special place. Nowadays I'm struggling just to keep going just like everyone else, painting time is very precious but I am determined.
I saw from your old posts that you know about icons, do you make them? I've seen some fine work here. The techniques are amazing.
Xarika poli, I'll pass on the halvadopitta for now (diet! ) but you should taste the new season's grapes!

Re: Hello from Syros, Greece

I do make icons, although I am still at the learning process. I have been trained for classical art, so no hagiography lessons for me. Just many books (kondoglou and vranos are the best), lots of osmosis through everyday exposure to all sorts of icons (good and bad...), and great love for the history of all that, since it connects antiquity, byzantion, renaissance and modern art. Such pleasure discovering things. Not to mention the technique. It was an eye opener on so many levels.

Not to mention that people can get rid of paintings, but you know very well that if you make an icon it will never be destroyed, thrown away etc. A bit selfish there... Do you make icons?

I've tasted this year's grapes, not from Syros though. Say hi to Syra agapimeni, and I really hope you (and all of us) survive this rotten crisis just as we should. Proudly and still smiling.

See you aroung the forum, in fact I am adding you to my contacts if you don't mind.
