need some help with this illustration

I have just started illustrating a children's book. I am having some trouble because I can't seem to get the child in the book to look like an actual kid. My model is nine years old, and she insisted she wouldn't pose for me unless I let her wear the turkey hat (grr). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

You need a ground shadow and soften the facial features.

A couple of suggestions I would offer are:

• do a dozen pencil sketches of the scene until you have mastered the pose.
• do 3-5 test paintings to test the materials you are using (ie paints, etc)
• doing those test paintings will help master the pose in the medium
• Your figures are very heavy & dark; try a lighter version
• simplify the details; when drawing kids, our hand has to be very gentle & soft
• look at other children's illustrations to see how they do kids. I'd start with Pooh.

I hope this is some helpful advice. Good luck with your project!

Here, some tips about illustrating books for children's

01. Draw!
02. Build up a portfolio of kids' book staples
03. The devil is within the detail
04. Simple faces say more
05. selection is that the key

Once the story is written and also the characters designed it is time to set up your book. Most image books tend to be 32 pages long and by the time you have got taken out the page, endpapers and also the publication credits you're left with simply 28. that is not many!

just to add, much of what causes the disconnect in that original drawing is the proportions in the figure. Kids heads are big compared to their bodies when compared to adults.
