Just having fun, not my usual subject. “Chupacabra on the Night of the Blood Moon”. This was painted from a photograph I took of Phylis Canion’s taxidermy preserved Chupacabra. DNA tests show it to be a cross between a wolf and a coyote. The original photo was taken in a brightly-lit classroom so I had to take some artistic license to imagine it at night. Guess I should call this multi-media because I used Golden Open acrylics plus gold leaf for the moon and copper mica powder for the edge of the moon. Comments welcome.

Well done but that’s an ugly animal.

He reminds me of our dog, Pedro. Kind eyes! lovely light. The moon is burning and made me think of forest fires. Interesting seeing your name ‘Wolff’ written beside the wolf!

The painting is well done. The creature is not pretty.

Does “chupacabra” literally mean “goatsucker” or is my Spanish faulty?

Yes, in Central America and the Philippines(?) it was believed that Chupacabras (more like a space alien than a wolf-coyote) sucked the milk from goats at night. There is also a bird known as a goatsucker that had the same reputation though it was probably only eating insects at night. Phylis Canion was told by her brother that the creature she found dead in the road in front of her ranch in DeWitt County was a Chupacabra and the name stuck for the wolf-coyotes found in Texas. Some claim they are just coyotes with mange.

eoghan – Yes, I laughed when I signed the painting. Didn’t think about that until it was done.
