into the light at KIm''s farm

sketching out a friend's farm yesterday - I liked the pattern of the second gateway seen throught the first and the huge contrast of dark and light, looking into the light

- and then Spot the cat came to join me and toast in the dappled shade for a while

Coffee, ink and white pencil in a Strathmore book with buff paper - that book is on the never-to-buy-again list as the paper is too thin, too absorbent so wet mediums soak through, the paper buckles, just generally not good enough.

I wish I'd put Spot a little less in line with the gateway but had to get her sketched quickly as cats aren't the most cooperative models about keeping still. I didn't stop to think. I think I made it work with the deep shadow on the left and the dappled sun on the right - do you think?

Love this. I've noticed that when you may have the luxury to spend a little more time on a subject, the result often puts me in the mind of at least two illustrators that I adore, but cannot for the life of me name at this particular moment. Ahhh.... It's like that actor who was in that thing... y'know.

I really like the light and dark contrasts in this. I've never used toned paper but the more work I see on it, the more I like the idea of it.

I'm also imagining the composition without the cat and realising what a huge difference the cat makes to the feeling of the scene. All this is interesting learning for me!

Re: into the light at KIm''s farm

I agree - she made a massive difference and I had to sketch really fast before she got bored and moved on

Great use of tone in this sketch, vhere. Looking at this sketch again reminds me that my instinct was right in more fully exploring mostly monotone media before moving on to other media when I start exploring different materials in sketchbooks.
