Re: As the Oily Rag Burns..... March 2018

I don't know why galleries become so disrespectful to artists...but they can be and that's a shame...and somehow they manage to get away with it...

Mary, the gallery here has a lovely, but smaller private collection, I need to keep up with the featured events better...

Re: As the Oily Rag Burns..... March 2018

Good Morning Oilycats!!!

My co-op works the best for me: pay $150 monthly rent the months you are showing, and no commission. Although that will cahange in September, then it is going up to 10%. I am doing a duo show in December, so that. will be like $600, but I am making payments in advance to take care of that.

Marcia, that does sound like a good deal with your gallery.

Jess, glad you had time to paint...I actually had time to think of painting...first in a while.

Re: As the Oily Rag Burns..... March 2018

Hi everyone. Glad you could paint, Jess, even if inside. I've been painting myself. It's amazing, because since daylight savings started, I've been walking around in a sleep-deprived haze.

Marcia, $600 to display sounds like a lot to me, but that may just be my inexperience with galleries talking. Best wishes on the exhibit.

Mary, I did the same thing when the Rembrandt exhibit visited Seattle.

Re: As the Oily Rag Burns..... March 2018

Interesting gallery talk, I do not get out to them as often as I would like. A co op sounds like a very logical solution to the usual Gallery issues though, and something I will have to consider if I decide to step into find art at some point.

Re: As the Oily Rag Burns..... March 2018

Delo, I used to be part of my gallery a year ago, which is a co-op, and we would meet every month to plan our next exhibit. Even though I can no longer work there because of illness problems, they made a permanent space for me, which I think is a first for the Contemporary Art Gallery. I pay $100 a month for the space, and I still get to attend the meetings and help make decisions whenever I can.

I feel very welcome because they are all my friends. I'm just sorry the Doc won't let me 'work' a shift because of my weakness.

I think you would call us a co-op.

Nancy, your gallery-mates must really value you a lot to make an arrangement like that. It sounds like the perfect situation.

That is an incredible arrangement Nancy, and the monthly fee is not extreme either. Out of curiosity, how many artists show their work at the co-op?

Re: As the Oily Rag Burns..... March 2018

Good Morning Oilycats!!!

By the time I tried to check in last night, I was getting the 502 error, but I see WC is back again.

I had to go to the old studio and pick up an easel, and the mess nearly had me in tears. I am going to schedule one day a week to go up there to clear stuff out and make the space useable again. At this point, apart from art supplies and paintings, if I don't miss it since I moved, I don't need it, right?

Some truth to the not missing=not needing...though when I recovered my things from Ca, was a little funny to me, that items I had forgotten I had there were now duplicated as I had bought similar items sense...guess my preferences are consistent...

Re: As the Oily Rag Burns..... March 2018

Thanks, Marcia - I was feeling stupid again because of not knowing what was happening to me when I tried to post. It's wonderful that you know today's technology so well

Delo, our gallery also has two additional spaces for artists not in the gallery. Each is also $100 per month, but I don't know how much they take for a sale. They only kept $20 of the $100 of the encaustic that I sold this month, but I'm not sure if that applies to nonmembers. I'll check it out for you when I get a chance.

Heh, Marcia. It sounds like ultimately you'll be able to resist the "...but I'll need it someday" trap that I repeatedly fall into. It's always reinforced when I find I need something that I've thrown away, which isn't a realistic measure. But what is your ultimate plan for the studio space? If you rent it out as an artist studio, maybe some of the stuff could stay.

Nancy and Marcia, I had the same problem getting to WC - glad it's cleared up now.

Delo, your work is really good - I can't believe you're not in a gallery already!

Becca, I hope all is beginning to settle down and get back to normal for you.

I'm off to paint! Yay!

Annie, you probably saw the Rembrandt paintings about the same time I did. Around 2007. Here's the Portland add. http://tdn.com/lifestyles/dutch-delights-portland-museum-exhibit-features-six-rembrandt-paintibutngs/article_f1ca5723-9462-5b57-b8d1-726580c76a12.html
Nancy, I'm glad you have a spot in the gallery and you can still paint.

We sometimes have a nice gallery display in Pendelton. Once they had Andy Warhol art. One time a classmate had an art show with his work and John Lennon's art. Mike isn't promoting art right now but he gets my facebook posts Just in case he changes his mind. LOL.
