Re: By the River

From a photographer:

Heavily cloudy or overcast days create a similar effect as a giant soft box
on the light from the sun diffusing the light and almost, if not completely,
eliminating shadows. Because there are no shadows, the light falls evenly on
the entire subject, allowing for color to be really saturated. Bright sun can harshly wash out some colors and create hard contrasts.

This might be the answer John.

Re: By the River

I usually shun the overcast days and often even the bright sunny days, waiting for that softer, golden evening light, but this painting of yours has convinced me to head out more often when the sky is gray. Excellent piece as always.

Re: By the River

Overcast days soften an image but also lose tonal contrast. The colour saturation of objects is more 'true' than sunny days but is still diminished giving muted greyer colours. If you do your own back lighting this really helps overcome this problem. A little bending of the truth is as ever the artists perogative.. And yes i was a professional photographer for many many years. Overcast days were always a problem without lighting.

Nice job Derek!

Re: By the River

Thanks much contu.

Raffless: one of many forums on the subject:
https://www.photography-forums.com/t...re-best.17233/

and from Richard McKinley noted pastel painter:

The brightest saturation of fall colors in mass occurs on an overcast day and in a backlit lighting scenario. Without the cast of the blue sky on an overcast day, the intensity of the warm tones will be magnified. On a sunny day when light travels through the translucent foliage from behind, it can be lit up like a lampshade.

Not arguing, just interested in the phenomenon.

Capturing landscape and foliage is the hardest thing for me. I absolutely admire your work!
