Re: Winter evening

That is very nice. You've accomplished good depth with your limited palette, and except for the feeling of intense cold, it's serene. The grasses, even though dead, add softness and even "life" to it. Yes, nicely done.

Re: Winter evening

I like it very much. I'd like it better if the grasses weren't placed the same distance from the edges. I think having some go off the side would be more appealing. I love the undulating edge at the tree line.

Re: Winter evening

Very nice, with good feeling of depth in the background. If you added more detail in the very front, it would enhance the depth effect.

Re: Winter evening

Kinda looks Minnesota for 3 months of the year. Very well done. That's a lot of detail for a small format. As to what Tom said, if you cropped the bottom couple of inches off so the grasses pop up into the frame you would get that depth effect. But then we would miss that subtle shading of the grass stems in the surrounding snow.

Re: Winter evening

Thank you very much for all the kind words!

Few words about the composition - I'm primarily photographer and I prefer simple and closed compositions (not aways of course, but often...). About the left-right distance - maybe it can benefit from a little bit more difference, but I feel it well balanced as is. The thing that I have to work on is the brushwork, and maybe to not get into so much details.

Thanks again!

Re: Winter evening

One photographer to another.. i knew

Composition is nailed on. And finding beauty in the simplest of things is what makes a good one.

As regards less detail. Im with you on that as reproducing photographs is a bit meh as a photographer. Who wants the same image on their wall? So yes go exploring down the expressionist route. Youll have more fun doing so!
