I love red and purple coleus and looks like vinca also? All in a decorative pot to shine in the garden. A beautiful garden still life, Derek, wow! Love this!!!

Re: Stone Coleus X

It is a lovely painting, you did it so nicely. I love the crisp colors and the stone, board they are sitting on, it all looks so very real as well as the plants...amazing job! Such eyes an artist has to be able to see something and put it to canvas...amazing to me how one can do so and make it look like a photo....

I relate things I see that I like, to my own life, the memories it evokes, and this is no exception...coleus were something we gave to our moms when I was in grade school long, long ago. Mom put it in the oven to keep it from freezing - yes, that was a real possibility in our home in my childhood - and the pilot on the kerosene oven was too warm for it, cooked it...I was heartbroken that my gift to my mom had died and it took me a long time to be able to look at a coleus once more. They are amazing plants, actually, and it cheers my heart to see on here this morning, as I am longing for yesteryear and its childish freedoms of late. Thank you kindly for sharing this with us. Blessings on your eyes and hands as you show us the world through your eyes.

Gosh, this has GOT to be one of the most realistic pieces you've ever done, Derek. Incredible. The dimension, and distance shown between the plant, and the background is outstanding.

Re: Stone Coleus X

Hi there Bill: I appreciate you stopping by. You know it is amazing how sometimes you post a painting on WC and it becomes way tighter (realistic) than the actual painting. Up close there are quite a few bits of sloppy brushwork
My intention was to handle this super complexity with careful observation. I know there are botanical and floral fans out there with a keen eye.
By the way, this was a labor of many glazes. The grass was done with mostly a grainer brush, one of my favorite tools.
Thanks so much.
Derek

Well, I surely wouldn't deem that brushwork "sloppy" by any stretch of the imagination. "Painterly" would seem to be an appropriate description, but that sort of brushwork is a very good characteristic. So, some painterly brushwork, when viewed at a distance, or scaled down a bit creates a wonderfully realistic painting such as this one.

I admire the way you handle acrylic! I couldn't do that if the devil were after me with a stick!

By the way,....you do glazes very well!
