Re: Anne's Graphite Sketches 2016

I'm currently working on another bird drawing from a photo I took while holidaying in Patagonia, Agrentina, South America. This hawk was very tame, walking around with the tourists and not fussing at all while we all took as many pictures as we could.

Still have quite a bit to do, but it's coming along nicely.

Anne, I love your graphite sketches. I think they are really good and with practice, you'll get better at it.

You seem to get bigger range of values than I am with my set of HB-8B of Staedler Mars Lumograph pencils. May I ask what graphite pencils you are using?

Absolutely. I do my rough sketch/outline with an F pencil (Grand and Toy Roundedge brand) which is between the HB and B.

I also use a couple of different HB pencils, one is the standard wooden pencil (Grand and Toy Roundedge), and 2 different mechanical pencils, one with 0.5mm lead (Pentel leads) and one with 0.7mm (Staedtler lead); strangely these 2 seem to create slightly different darkness but the permanent fine points let me do detailed work better than with the wooden one which is good for larger areas. I have read that pencil hardness is not standardized so not all HBs for example will produce the same shade, that's probably what I'm experiencing.

For the really dark parts I use 4B (Staedtler Mars Lumograph). I do a lot of lightening with both my kneaded eraser and my pencil eraser, and the large light areas are done with the F.

Anne

Anne, thank you. The lightening you do with your erasers and the different mechanical pencils you use must be what gives the different results you're getting. I definitely think the hardness not being standardized across brands contributes too, as I've heard that Faber-Castell 9000 pencils are harder than Staedlers and Derwents.

Finally got the hawk finished. I made a few changes as I went along too.

This is a butterfly that I photographed on some marsh plants at a lake near to where I live. If I ever get a handle on doing coloured pencils I'd like to redo it in colour.

Re: Anne's Graphite Sketches 2016

I had my doubts about how well this strawberry flower would turn out. I was really concerned that I would not be able to get the central part done so that is had dimension and how to get all those light parts in that represent the stamens. In the end I am quite pleased with the result.

Beautiful. Both of these would look great in colored pencil too.

Super drawings. I'm particularly fond of the bald eagle.
