Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

If I learn 1/10 what I did from the Edges PAL, I'll be a happy camper. Thank you!

Thank you all for joining in - and the kind words!

Sandra - that's fast - crikey! Looking quite stormy and very lively

Viv - really, you can do as you wish with the ref - no holds barred! ...... and even though Vicki said 'no snow there' I still think the white sand looks like snow

Here's my first blocking-in .......

.. on a piece of mountboard, 7x5" approx ....... 15 mins.

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

Thanks for the new Paint along.
Here is a quick sketch I did in about a hour this evening. Love my saggy horizon and the fact that I seem to have misplaced a layer of sand dunes! Nevertheless, if anyone has any criticism of the part below the horizon I would be so grateful.

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

Wow - that's really good Hope!
Saggy horizon is really a wavy 'edge' of the sea against the b/g of dunes - rather than a straight edge against the sky. I think the ref was taken at sea level so that line appears fairly close, thus uneven (that's my reasoning anyway!).

Those dunes are easily replaced - if you want them - but I do think your waves are excellent.

Here's the next stage of mine - probably 20 mins - (stopped for lunch) so it's going really quickly I think ....... next stage, refinement and finish of this exercise ....... maybe a 'proper painting', when time allows, of one of the other refs.

Meggs gave me a couple of really blue seascapes, so I'll add them in case anyone would like to try one for their post-practice work (See first post)

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

I think this exercise is finished for this one - probably another 30-45 mins fiddling. Not too happy with the foam - can't decide whether that's just because the painting is too small or my tones are not right.
Roughed in the sand dunes.

I don't usually paint seascapes, I steer well clear of 'em! It's been a good exercise for me though so I might feel better when tackling 'The Painting'!!!

Oh my goodness Maureen! Your practice piece is so far away from anything I could achieve, and this is your practice painting?!!!! and I think you've made a wonderful job of everything, especially the foam and I love the colour in the turning wave!

Hopen - No crits from me...yours is much better than anything I could achieve also!

Wonderful work so far everyone! I have a question: Is there any limitation in the style as long as it's acrylic? I'm thinking of tackling this one using diluted acrylics similar to watercolors Hope that's ok!

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

You are quick Sandra. My sketches would look like a first grader, I have to do fulll blown paintings to look decent.

Good one Hope.

Maureen... I think you Do seascapes right well! Your sand dunes look good too.

I downloaded the picture to stare at. Now trying to figure out how I can paint with all the fans running. It has been over 100 degrees every day so sitting outside is not very comfortable and the fans running inside make the paint dry on the brush.

Acrylic on 8 1/2 by 11 inches, watercolor paper. This was very tough for me, but I am glad to have the practice. Thank you, Maureen for the forum and the instructions. Your painting was terrific and a good one to try to learn from.

Re: P.A.L.- Paint-a-Long : Making waves! Seascape.

Wow, your seascapes/waves are wonderful!
Maureen, I was sure that yours is perfect before seeing it. One can almost feel the movement/ rolling of the wave... it's wonderful.

Carol, I love your waves, the colors and form of the wave in it. The watercolor paper seems to be a great support for the translucent water.

I am trying "my" wave now... with several cups of coffee
