Elk fighting - FINISHED

So one of my son's requested a drawing, a Elk standing on a bridge with a trout jumping out of the river and a pheasant flying in the background I think that is a little to much for me right now since I am still learning scratchboard So I thought I would start with the first one, the elk. I found a few nice photos but I think this one might be Crias' in the WC library, not sure. So I went with this one because I thought he might like "the battle" since he is in the Army. This is a WIP and I would like some feedback if someone sees more that needs to be done before I ink it...Thank you.

Re: Elks fighting

I think you have a nice scratch going here. I would probably eliminate the small tree (?) under the one elk. Your picture will be stronger if you get rid of it. And maybe bring your grass all the way down.

Well done and terrific antlers. I agree with Marcia's comment about the tree.

Re: Elks fighting

Thank you all for your help, now I need to figure out how to get the plant out of the pic, do I black ink over it?

Re: Elks fighting

I personally like the little tree. Since your scratchings on the tree are going sideways, and the grass is up and down, even if you ink it out, it will still show when the light hits it. (depending on how deep the scratches are of course) I would leave it but make it more distinct.

You said you were going to ink the board, did you mean washes? They would very much make the scene come alive. I would not touch the tree until you have the elk done and thensee if you like it or not.

I agree about the grass, bring it down some more.

You have done an extremely good job on the elk. Can't wait to see it as it goes along.

Re: Elks fighting

I think you'd have minimal scratches coming through if you ink over it since you would be rescratching where the grass would be and adding a leg. I have to respectfully disagree with Sue. My eye is going straight to the bush. But it's your piece and you ultimately have the final say. Whatever you decide you still have a great piece.

Re: Elks fighting

Pam, these elks are coming out nicely. I'm sure you'll figure out what to do with the tree.

Re: Elks fighting

It looks very nice. I am with Marcia about the tree, I find it very distracting. When you say inking, is colour or are you going to back in with black?

Re: Elks fighting

Finished the Elks. Finally received my FBs and was able to finish painting. There was not much I could do with the stupid plant I put in the way so I darkened it and added a few more to try to move the eyes away. another learning scratch This is a 9x12. Thanks for Looking

Nice work. I think the color work really rounded the piece out.
