The reference is wonderfully bold. I'd like to join, and hope I'm navigating this properly.

Juanita -a warm welcome - you got here and you'll easily find your way back - the thread is 'stuck' in place at (or near) the top of the forum page

Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

I'm working on my entry but it's not finished yet. I first tried it on claybord but what a failure that was. Ugh!!! I used rubbing alcohol to "erase" it. Now I've got one going on artist board and it's coming along nicely. I love the contrast between the darker bg and the bright oranges and only hope I can do it justice.

Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

Hi Everyone!
I'm working on my entry too and struggling! I may have to abandon the white parts and just try for replicating the folds in the cloth. My oranges, at this stage are looking all wonky. Sheesh! I wish I could draw better. I'm wrestling with the brushes and paints and everything! LOL Such is the state of a newbie!
Hope all is going well for everyone else and I'll probably have lots of questions after the reveal.

Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

I did my first attempt at painting the oranges today. Being frugal, I painted them on gessoed matboard. It wasn't a good painting surface. I am going to try again on a small canvas and see if I can get a better result. Thanks for this challenge!

Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

MaryPat, I use a lot of matboard for painting - sometimes gessoed sometimes not.
If not, the first coat sinks in but it does give a nice smooth surface for building the layers

Allison - just remember you don't have to stick closely to the ref at all - you are free to do what you like with it! Somewhere in the painting there'll be a hint of the original

I keep looking at my ref - still haven't decided on treatment though

Talking Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

It has been so very long-but I have spring break and plan to use all my free time with my brushes. Will give myself a time limit for this one. Can't wait to jump in!

Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

I just finished, thank the good Lord that I teach art! I have the opportunity to work on the painting throughout my day, during my prep and when I have the advanced classes. So, I get multiple benefits! The painting gets done and the kids get to see how a painting goes through stages to get done. I only wish I had my camera handy to take progression shots. I wasn't kidding when I said my oranges were red, blue and yellow!

Re: Different Strokes : March 2012 Challenge

Candy - welcome! Hope you enjoy taking part with us

Colleen - I never had time to paint when I was teaching, so how come you do huh? Did you set the Advanced group the same project? - now if only we'd had WC and computers in the art room when I was working - what a difference they might have made
Got most of mine done today - pleasant hours painting

Hi Everyone! This is my first post on here though I've been following a lot of different groups over the past year. I just started using acrylics a few months ago and would love to give this a shot!
