I saw this village while we were traveling from Salzburg, Austria to Munich, Germany. When I started this painting, I drew the image and put masking fluid on the church and trees so I could freely splash on the blue paint for the sky, but inadvertently dripped some masking fluid right down the middle of the page. Impatient to start painting, I wiped off the excess fluid before it was completely dry grinding fluid into the paper. When I applied the blue paint, the fluid streak stood out as a dark vertical line in the sky. What to do? Not wanting to start over, I decided to make a shadowy city in the background with the annoying streak as a large church spire. When you have lemons . . .
