Dumbo

As some of you may remember, I recently did a painting of a pet Ball Python named “Lilly” for my son who is away at college. His girlfriend is also attending college and she keeps rats as pets. Specifically, she keeps Dumbo rats which have a recessive gene that makes their ears big.

I am assuming that if their relationship continues, and it gives indications that it will, there will be an unfortunate rodent consumption event on the horizon. To lessen the emotional trauma associated with the loss of pet vermin, I have painted her a picture of her own, based on an image I found on line.

C&C welcome.

12” x 16” on 140# Lanaquarelle CP, WN/DS paints.

Re: Dumbo

Hehehe- RATS can be viscous, and 'Oh so loving.' A full grown rat would be a challenge for many a ball python-- Yes a large Ball Python around 4ft shouldn't have an issue eating an adult rat; but with Ball Pythons, (unless it is an older female) it is usually not the case. Now a red-tailed boa would make any rat a "Happy meal".

BTW, the ability of prey to fight back is why many reptile keepers feed their animals dead prey. I don't, but many do! Rats can put up a fight!

Your son, your grand-snake child, and your future rat child, should be one happy family for a while.... Wonderful rat, but his/her tail looks like a mouse tail, and not a rat tail. RATS are large and their tails are quite a bit larger too. Rats tend to have a longer more triangular face as well.

I like the colors and the painting over-all, but it gives me the impression of a mouse, and not a rat. BTW, there are dumbo mice and fancy mice, as well as dumbo rats, and fancy rats...

Never-the-less, your son's girlfriend will cherish that painting!

Greg

Re: Dumbo

Oh yeah - Rat and snake is a (life) dangerous community!
Your motif Scott is excellent, very reduced and nice color choice!

Re: Dumbo

Cute painting!
No my favorite creature though. Shortly they will be coming out of the fields and into the barns. Annoying pests they are.

When it makes me smile...I must declare "Love it"...thanks, after the struggle I incurred on most recent creation, it felt well to appreciate the true and pure concepts of this wonderful craft. Thanks Scott!

Re: Dumbo

I appreciate your reason for the snake and rat paintings although I don't like the subjects. Shouldn't the rat's ears be larger?

I'm ever the optimist; here's hoping that the two become best of friends and share as much love as your son and his sweetie.

I really have no clue. I've never seen a Dumbo rat in real life.
