Junipers At Needles Overlook

"Junipers At Needles Overlook" Watercolor on Strathmore Series 400 watercolor paper. 9"x9"

Painted using a Koi 18 pocket field sketch box and a Rosemary & Co. #6 SER344 watercolor brush. About 20 hours to complete.

This one almost didn't make the cut. I botched the sky color early on, making it far too aqua in color (way too much yellow) I fixed it by coming back in with a mix of Winsor & Newton white guache and the Koi watercolors (mixed in a separate, detached pool to avoid contamination of the Koi cakes). It took some work to get a decent gradient from dark to light and it is far from perfect, but it turned out ok.

Note: if you've never used Rosemary & Co. watercolor brushes, you owe it to yourself to try them out. They're phenomenal.

Questions, comments and critiques are welcomed.

Cheers,

hhh

Congratulations on a beautiful painting, HHH! Your hours paid off handsomely, especially on a Strathmore 400.

Good save on the sky color - I would have no idea of your struggle without your narrative. I love your texture on the juniper "trunks" as well as your terrain.

Keep up the great work!
Frank

Striking composition! Your fine details are amazing! And I like your sky "rescue" -- the blue is vibrant and sets off the trees and rocks wonderfully.

Great rescue on the sky, well observed tree and rocks.

Fine painting, you've really caught the forms and the arid feel of the place - the Needles in Canyonlands is one of my favorite and definitely my most visited place in the southwest.

I'm always greatly impressed (and encouraged!) by what you manage to get out of that little Koi paintbox.

I can see the white gouache! But you made a great job rescuing that sky. The twisted trunks and green foliage are beautifully painted. Congratulations.

Re: Junipers At Needles Overlook

Great save on the sky! But twenty hours?!! That exceeds my patience budget by seventeen.

Fabulous detail work that absolutely breathes life into the scene. You captured the essence of the place perfectly.

Wish I could do that, but I would have to save up my daily patience allocation for a month.
