    Hi everyone,

Just thought I’d share the start of my new scratchboard project. While on vacation in Colorado last summer, I managed to get a pretty good photo of a nuthatch clinging to a tree. I love these little birds and have them visit my birdfeeder frequently. I ordered some 6 x 12 inch scratchboards so I can do a tall, narrow piece for a change. I’m looking forward to this one. I’m just using a #11 X-Acto blade on this for now. I hope you’ll follow along. C&C welcome. Thanks for looking! :)

Hi Kay. Aren’t nuthatches just wonderful? I love their gentle sound, too. Glad to have you follow along. :)

Ah, finally, I have an update to post. I have been neglecting this piece, and got back to it tonight. It feels good to be working on it again. I’m doing something new…and that’s always a little scary. I can only hope it will work in the long run, but so far, I’m feeling ok with it. The new something? A whitened background. I’m using steel wool to create a somewhat softened, lightened background for this nuthatch. The bird and the bark of the tree will be in crisp detail, the background, a soft, woodsy atmosphere. Will it work? I hope so. :) The steel wool clears off ink a whole lot faster than my X-Acto knife, so it’s felt a bit out of control, but yet, I’m enjoying the process. It’s looking messy right now, and it’s in such an ugly stage! More tweaking will come along later. It’s after midnight and it’s time for me to let it rest.

C&C welcome. Thank you for looking!

At last, there’s a bird in this scene. I’ve been fine-tuning the background with a combination of steel wool and a fiberglass brush. I’m intentionally leaving it soft and sort of abstract, which should help the bird to really stand out. Now that the background is mostly in place, I’ve used a Faber-Castell Pitt pen to draw the bird. He’s just getting started, and I’ll be using more ink and an X-Acto knife for the details. I’m starting to settle into this WIP now, and I’m having fun with it. :)

Just a little more progress on this. I’m mostly working on the detail of the tree bark at the moment. As for the small twigs I’ve put into the background, I’m not sure if I’ll keep them or not. They’re just roughly in place and would need more work if I keep them there. Just going to let it rest overnight and think about it. Your thoughts are welcome on this.

                Thanks for looking! :)

                    This is going beautifully!

Scratchboard is a mystery to me. I want to try it, and even got a few things five years ago at least. Been too puzzled to even try.

Yet you make it look so fun, as the picture takes shape.

                    I’ll keep checking back…
