Re: As the Oily Rag Burns..... September 2018

Good Morning Oilycats!!!

Good grief Paul! Thank God you are still with us!

I didn't get nearly enough done yesterday, but I am going hiking anyway. I think it will be a short one and nearby, so I decided, screw it, I need to get out, and the weather is getting cooler, esp in the morning.

I have to have images in for the October show, so I want to get my current pieces at least close enough to done, so that I can send in an image. It is for online promos, so I can swap it out when the piece is finished.

Thanks for the welcome. While all my post are currently here, they seem to come and go. Maybe it's my ISP.

I hope the WC gremlins aren't coming out od hibernation...

Usually when mine go 'missing', it is because I have previewed them, and the forgot to hit submit. the perils of having too many devices to post from. And absentmindedness.

I found an interesting article that you all might like; it's on eliminating distractions so one can focus on painting (a very timely article in my case):
https://www.outdoorpainter.com/12-wa...hile-painting/

Interestingly, this is what I've been doing instead of painting for a while now, although the article has some more painting-specific tips. In my case, I'm mercilessly throwing stuff out or donating so that I can have a more organized environment, and reorganizing the stuff that stays. It's hard, but needs to be done. I just hope I can do it quickly and get back to painting! But I really have too much going on anyway. There are so many things I try to do: volunteering as a lead usher; volunteering at events put on by a local civics organization; volunteering at church, and attending church services and events; the film festivals (there's a one-week French Film Festival coming up this month, and also the one-day Cat Video Fest which I don't want to miss); and then there's my desire to put in time volunteering for the midterm elections, just to name a few. When will I possibly have time to paint given all that (especially as the length of sunlight each day fades, so does my energy level)? But painting is the priority - I'll just have to pare this list down.

Re: As the Oily Rag Burns..... September 2018

I am pretty organized, and use a lot of the hints in that link! My biggest obstacle is the disease of volunteerism. Got a huge dose yesterday. My local arts council decided to pay for any board member to attend the county arts council annual conference, and any of the associated events. Since I am on both boards, I encouraged this, and made sure that anyone who was interesetd could attend.
http://www.artsconnectionnetwork.org...onference-2018
I spent a gret deal of my day yesterday getting everyone signed up for events. And because I am interested in fund raising for my local group, I am part of a panel on fiscal sponsorship next weekend.

The National Park show is this weekend, and I turned down the local art council's president's request to help at our booth. I have a piece in the show, but enough is enough! Just because I have that particular day 'free' does not mean that I have that much free time! I have cut out a lot of volunteering this year, and still I am swamped! It helped that I made firm commitments to show my work in October, December, and January to keep me painting. Today, I was thinking, I might just make it!

The demand for things people want me to volunteer for is endless. I just have to decide what is doable and meaningful to me, and say "No" to the rest.

Re: As the Oily Rag Burns..... September 2018

Heh...I think we all know that you genuinely are Superwoman, Marcia. I say that with a lot of admiration. I don't even come close, nor at this point do I dare even aspire to! But like you, I tend to volunteer a lot and need to cut down - it's too easy to spend nearly a whole day on volunteer stuff, and I can't afford it. And even when it's for a shorter time - just a an hour or two - there's travel time and prep time and wind down time, and general drain on my energy level - during all of that I'm not painting.

Also, the downsizing I'm doing is not just about organizing per se, really, it's an attempt to cut down on possessions to allow me to better focus on what's important. And in my previous post, I didn't add the classes I take to my list of ToDos.

Still, it's very hard to understand how you manage to do all you do and yet are able to paint a lot and enter shows. Good for you to de-volunteer yourself when asked about the booth. It was smart of you to enter all those shows - deadlines always help. Keep us posted on how you do in them. And break a leg tomorrow on the National Park show - will they announce the winners then?

Good Morning Oilycats!!!

I hope the quiet in here is because you all lead busy lives and are having a splendid weekend.

Well, I didn't win a prize last night, but I was talikning to one of the intake jurors (not a finalist prize judge), and not only did he compliment me on my piece at this show, but he temembered my entries in the Palm Springs show, and said he loved the nocturne I had entered. I was flattered that he remembered that one, considering how many hundreds of paintings he had had to look at for both shows.
